Hi all, I decided to drop the sump pan on my s2a tonight. The photo shows what I found. Lots of fairly large chunks of metal. Can anyone identify the bits? Some are quite distinctive. Looks quite alarming. Should I be alarmed? Engine leaks a lot of oil but otherwise seems to run OK.

If you take the rocker cover off you should see which valve not working , if it sounds ok now will sound a lot better when sorted, it’s a head off job
Try turners for new parts, I read cheapies can fail quite quickly

Are any of the parts magnetic?
 
I would guess that tappet roller is magnetic, you could weigh the bits and I can check against mine which I have on bench
 
Thanks all. That looks like the part! Yes some are magnetic. Will take the rocker cover off and have a look. I've not had the vehicle long so don't know the history, but I was told by the last owner that the head was off and skimmed a few years ago. Engine seems to run fine as I said but I have noticed it quite smoky (white) as weather's got cold and (black) under heavy acceleration.
 
Weight of the bit is 67g.
All valves seem to be working.... took a video but too big to post here....
Maybe best to reassemble, run it for a few months, drop sump again and see if any more appears?
 
Tbh even though I am bit of an animal where machines are concerned I would not be happy running that engine, that is an awful lot of broken bits.
Look down the drivers side of the engine, see them row of bolt heads wired together? thats what holds the tappet assys in place, so head off bolt out tappets/carriers out and check.

Have you checked to see if all the valves open as much as each other, or one rocker arm adjuster bole/screw different length to the others.
 
It looked like all valves were working , but you can run it with cover off and you can also use u tube with link , may be oil squirting round but that’s a good sign , as lynall said check valve clearance using rule of 9 , also check all them retaining bolts in place as pic below on my 200di

I think Kermit correct as if you have lost the round follower the brass slider being hit by cam would be noisy and unable to get valve clearance
What is weight of magnetic bits and non magnetic
You can compare with below if magnetic bits heaverier than 43 g might be some of the guide gone

Bit more investigation this morning. There are chunks from at least 1 round slider, weight adds up to more than 43g. There is also a clearly identifiable tab from the brass slider. There are some chunks of oily filings welded together, and a few bits of what looks like rubber gasket.

I've decided to do the job properly. So my question now to you more knowledgeable people is if I'm taking the head off, and already got the sump off what is your ideal list of jobs to do while in there? I don't have the space or kit to remove the engine so it needs to be what can be done in situ. Its a 901 prefix S3 2.25L petrol.
 
I also had a piece of metal in my sump (200TDI). It was the same as one of your pieces in the photo. Was informed that is was potentially from the timing chest where someone had put the bolts in and they were too long.

the round tappet has dimples on either side one bigger than other which helps put them back in right way
In your bits how many steel bits have dimples in them , as Guns post is another problem
 
Here's what I have with the soft oily shrapnel bits removed (see photos).
1. Three bits that fit together. 17g. Magnetic. Not the roller.
2. Brass bits not magnetic clearly from a brass slider. 0.6g
3. Bits from at least 1 round tappet. 41.4g. Can't fit them together. More circular bits than for one dimple.

Two options I think. Put the sump back in and run it with the rocker cover off. Look and listen. OR remove head and do it properly. Any views?
