Interesting , is the centre bottom bit in pic 3 part of the roller, can you fit all pic 3 bits together to make a roller

I think as previous owner has head off ,he’s replaced the roller and brass guide
But you mentioned other symptoms
  1. Engine leaking oil , where from , is it burning oil
  2. White smoke , when engine cold or hot
  3. Black smoke accelerating , hot or cold

  4. I would have sump back on and see how it performs for a petrol engine , mpg, 0-60 , check timing, tappet clearances, plug condition, engine compression etc you can put a vid up of engine running and the guys on here with petrol,engines can give 2nd opinion of how it sounds , some say as quiet as a sewing machine mines a noisy diesel. After this then decide if any problem big enough to strip engine . With sump off you can remove a big end or main bearing quickly to see if bearings worn while off
 
Here's my effort at fitting pic 3 bits together. Only superglued my fingers together twice lol. See photo. Total weight 43g. I can't get the other bits to fit but maybe just too mangled.

There are two dimple profiles. I have tried to illustrate by drawing the profile. One has a shoulder the other does not. I am hoping steve you can confirm this from the one on your bench?

I've ordered the sump gasket. Will do when it arrives and post a video.

Other:
White smoke cold
Black under acceleration hot or cold

The other bit ? That will be same as Guns post where wrong bolt been inserted through timing case and over tightened forcing off a bit of the casting not the end of the world as just a case of putting a stud in with loctute or similar

do spark plugs look black and sooty which would indicate a rich mixture and black smoke

Hi, I got it running last night, let it warm up and then took the video with the rocker cover off.

All looks and sounds ok to me. Any views?
Also checked compression 10bar / 140psi on 2x and 9.5 bar / 135psi on 2x. Ok I think. Valve clearances made small adjustments. Knocking sound when I put the rocker cover back on but I think I've maybe just screwed it down too tight.
 
I dropped the sump because it was leaking.
Here's a photo of the plugs. Will be another week of so before I can reassemble and get it running.


The only correct way to check the plugs as they are being used is to do a plug chop.
Get car hot, find decent bit of road where you make the old girl work and have somewhere safe to stop, give her some beans in say third (not just a whiff of throttle, but pulling hard for at least a few seconds) then at 3/4 revs switch of ignition and coat to a halt, remove and check the colour of the plugs.
 
If it knocks when rocker cover fitted check for witness marks inside rocker cover , the tappet adjusters look quite long if head has been skimmed it is some times necessary to fit two rocker cover gaskets.
