What are the implications if driving around for a short period of time with your mass air flow sensor unplugged.

lack of power blah blah ( ECU doesnt know how much air is coming in and what temp the air is ) .

I was lacking power before i unplugged it so aint got much to lose seems to be running better. As long as i aint doing no long term damage.

you should be ok with MAF disconnected , but see if anyone on here close to you that you could quickly borrow theres to try , befor you fork out on getting a new/good 2nd hand one .

My TD5 was suffering from low power when it was cold and the dealer replaced the air flow sensor. It made a hell of a difference, but they said they often fail.

Thats a great idea. wonder if the one from my disco will fit. Cheers
Yes it will fit.
Treat it with kid gloves though as the tungsten wire element is very fragile. Dont drop or bash it and dont poke your fingers inside it.

How do I know if mine has gone or not? I need a new CAT system so had the emissions checked first to see what had caused them to go. Limit for CO is 0.3 and mine came back at 3.6 !!!!! Lambda reading was 0.966 and the limit is 0.970. I was told I needed 2 x new lambda sensors, 1 x MAF and a new cat system.......Getting an average of around 9mpg around town, lots of white smoke when first stared Mainly in the morning when it's cold), rich smell from exhaust too........anyone know if i really do need all these things or not? Another thing to note is that I unplugged the MAF to see what would happen while it was running, and the engine stopped. Plugged back in and fires up great, with nice tickover (900rpm) and smooth revs........

It sounds like yours is working then. If you disconnect it from the pipe work and then plug the electrical connector back in you should see the element glow. If its glowing it's working. Don't do this for long though cos it will burn it out without the airflow cooling it.
