My 2.5DT used to be an auto and it would do 23 - 24 mpg or down to 18 - 20 towing a caravan. I had it converted to a manual now it does 26 - 28 mpg or down to 22 - 24 towing a caravan or trailer. I find it better to drive now its a manual and better for towing. My old RR classic with a 200tdi had similar mpg figures but had more low down grunt than the 2.5 BMW engine.

If I wanted more power I still wouldn't buy a tuning box. A remap perhaps. But I prefer mechanic tuning. Of course that costs more money than these trinkets that pull figures out of the air.

The not constantly thing would be amazeballs in the winter, getting heat into my engine is a ballache first thing. I can't leave it sat idle to heat up either, I need to drive about 2-3 miles before I start getting heat. St00pid viscus fans. Unfortunately I don't trust myself with electronics (if I did, I'd have spotlights on my front bumper by now), so Datateks mod isn't for me. :(
It's very simple:)

Could you send of the scematics for me to evaluate then please? See if someone born with all fingers and no thumbs can do it. :p
PM me with an email address. Just 2 wires in it's simplest form, one of those is to the chassis:)

Coolbeans, I'll have a crack at this and see where it takes me. I assume you just disconnect the viscus fan and throw it away with this mod in place?

Yep just remove the viscous and keep it for emergencies:rolleyes:
I had a broken wire in the loom so when I fitted the mod it did not work at first so the fans had never run:eek:
You need to be careful about setting the stat, too low and the fans will run too often, too high and it's not good for the engine and the temperature will take a while to come down. Makes a small difference to MPG particularly on short runs.

I was planning on building the kit off the vehicle first and testing it first before throwing it on.

Another question, Trying to get my head around to two switches, override makes sense, why the second before the stat? When turning on the override do you have to turn off the stat? If so wouldn't a 3 point switch make more sense so when you go into override it automatically turns off the stat?

One switch disables the system, the other causes the fans to run constantly, a 3 position centre off switch is about 3 times more expensive than 2 SPST switches. They are not really needed, you can force the fans on or off with the stat. The stat is only a switch.

Righto, I'll stick to your master plan for now.
I just liked the idea of setting the stat to "normal" then putting it out of the way so it doesn't get knocked or adjusted in error. Although thinking about it, if I set it to electric only I only need a on-on switch, ether normal or override.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, need to make the basic system work first. So expect headlines of "man killed by solding face to Range Rover" in the near future.
