Hi all
I have a 1998 disco 2, manual, diesel and she has lost drive.

Two weeks ago we were all set for our 2 weeks holiday in cornwall and set off at 4am for the dreaded M5 journey. We got 12 miles from home on the M42 when there was a clunk underneath the car as if a stone had been flicked up off the road surface, didn't think too much about it. Approx 1 minute later, there was a strange whining sounds from the car and I'd lost all drive. Managed to pull onto the hard shoulder and recovered back home.
So, whats wrong with her? We have no drive, is there an easy way to check if it's the transfer box that failed or gearbox? I remember there is a cover at the rear of the transfer box, is it that easy to remove it and see if the shaft is rotating? Are there any other things I need to check?

I live in Tamworth, so if anyone can help with ideas or recommend a garage then please let me know.

Hi, yes I have tried changing between hI and lo range and still nothing.
Whilst I was sat in the car this morning, I tried engaging gears and the clutch pedal felt lie normal with no crunching etc. What I did think was strange, was I could also engage gears without the need for the clutch to be pressed? If the transfer or gearbox was broken, would I be able to engage gears without clutch?
 
Sorry, should say she has dumped oil out if both or one of the boxes....
There might be a bit of a clue there!
That's going to take a bit more looking than if one of the boxes has jumped out of gear or a half shaft broken.
 
Another quick update.....just been sat in changing gear and noticed I can select 4th with normal clutch engagemebt.....appreciate it's stationary, but even stationary I can hear the engine tone change and the car pulls forward.......yet all other gears don't appear to do anything....

I'm thinking now gearbox issue more than transfer box.
 
Just a quick question. With it in 1st gear, lift the clutch up and get someone else to check if either of the propshafts are going round.

Obviously make sure the transfer box is in high or low.

Thank you for the recommendation, spoke to paul and unfortunately it's too big of a job for him currently, but at least he was honest.

Hi JamesMartin ....from what I've been reading on line, it definitely sounds like the lay shaft is worn. Not sure how big of a job it is too replace the shaft as I've never opened a gearbox up. I'm half tempted to drop the box out myself on the drive (dropped a 300tdi gearbox in the past).

its worth pulling apart and looking but often it wrecks other parts including the case making box beyond repair
 
Dollars are tight after the holiday and I also brought another tow car to get my family on their holiday, so price will definitely be a factor.....
Best price so far for a replacement recon box fitted is £1200...
