You stay with the diesel gearbox ECU. Gearchange is electronic on the p38.
If you fit an uprated torque converter as well it changes up a bit sooner.
 
If you are going to buy a diesel get a later auto DSE or DHSE.
Post 99, ideally 2001/2 with less than 100K miles.
 
Rubbish, that's a hot start fix you are thinking of. The power box extends the injector timing to provide more fuel, it's also takes into account manifold pressure to prevent overfueling and excess smoke.
Not so, heaps of the chips I've seen have done nothing more than make the engine run rich by making the ECU think it is always cold. There aren't many smart eBay chips. I recognise that is also the "fix" to the hot starting problem, but derv or petrol, you see a lot of chips that only overfuel the engine and nothing more. Always worth spending the extra dosh and getting a remap instead.

A remap only alters the fueling. Put a scope on the ECU input to the power box and on the output, you will see that what it does is take the leading edge of the fueling signal and extend it. Making the engine think it was cold would cause overfueling and excessive fuel consumption as evidence by duff hot start mods without a timer.
Since the power box intercepts the FIP control and has no input to the ECU it cannot affect the cold running map.
