Help......L322 - Major Electrical Fault
Hi this is the first time I've posted on here but I've found the site very useful in the past 12 months buying and working on my 2003 L322.
Basically I've done a 2010 front end conversion on my Rangie a few months ago and all went well but as a precaution I only spliced in the new lighting connections just in case it didn't work or some parts where missing.
Anyway yesterday I started to remove the original light connections, and while cutting one of the earthing cables going to the left headlight, the alarm well off with a constant high pitched sound, so I disconnected the alarm and carried on, but when I came to test everything again I found the error message "Air Susp Inactive" but also no interior lights, no rear window operation (front windows ok) no central locking, steering heavy. Engine will start and runs ok so I could drive it but lowered the Suspension before I started work...

The brown(earth) cable only went another 100mm to the plug for the light which was removed prior, so I don't think I've broken a circuit or loop.

I've checked all the fuses in the passenger compartment, and the boot, and I've got power to both fuse boxes and fuses are ok. I'm now wandering if I might of nicked another cable while cutting the earth cable, because one of the 3 small cables had a bit of damage to the insulation (white/purple, white/black or green/red)

I'm thinking that it could be an earth fault because there's so many thing's not working but it looks like there is a supply to everything......
Any ideas on where to start would be great

Naughty boy !

If your working on wiring you should always disconnect the battery prior to starting work. As you will have power feeds to various cables even with the ignition off !!

Definitely sounds like you have shorted some cables

Could have blown some fuses but it sounds like it has effected the ECU as its made lots of other things go tits up.

Might have fooked one of you body control ECU modules :(

You need to plug it into diagnostics to see what it is at fault ?

Where are you located ? One of us might be able to lend you a hand ?

I tried to connect my diagnostics unit, but thats dead too...
I'm in Liverpool, England

SO now diagnostics connection at all is working with the car ? Or just the body control module ?

If its not connecting you could have fried your ECU :S

Sounds like you could have cut into or disturbed the CANbus data network....

The ABS, HDC, CBC, DSC, EBC, EAS and etc all talk on the CANbus, so if you have tapped that, the Air Suspension (among other things) will throw a fault, also you may find it difficult to connect using diagnostics due to a fault on the network.

But they are separate systems connected together
A fault on one shouldn't totally inhibit the rest

Anyhow the worst case could have just cut the canbus to the headlights but that shouldnt have caused all these problems.

But in the other hand if you had accidentally shorted 12v down the canbus data line then that could have caused some damage to the ecu's :S

If you have an ABS sensor go down (like I did) it will take out the DSC, HDC, EBC, ABS (obviously), the EAS and the CBC....

How do I know? cos when my drivers side front ABS sensor wiring was shot - the car throw a wobbler.....

Most oftentimes, any fault on the CANbus will also throw an Air Susp. Failure message too....

Changed the faulty ABS sensor that was causing my issue.
 
Blimey I worry about the electrics going wrong without tampering with it. Whats it all about doing facelifts. Perhaps I'm just a died in the wool plonker. My philos==y is if it isn't bust don't touch it.

As an electrical engineer( I have an O level u know) lol
Do not mess with Hard wired systems that you have no knowledge of what is connected to, or piggy backs off.

Your just asking for trouble if you don't know what your doing!

I've sorted it, it turned out to be a blown fuse.
F15 (5A) in the passenger side fuse box had gone, I must of missed it when checking all the fuses (I had to keep getting out the way while cars drove up the road).
I don't know why so many things stopped working, but to be honest I don't care at the moment.

Glad it was just a simple fuse and not something more sinister ;)

Would love to hear about your conversion as I'm due to be doing a 2007 supercharged facelift conversion to my 2002

I've already sorted all the wiring out so no worries there lol

Just wondered what parts required the grinder ?? Lol

I guess it each to their own, I just don't like the original lights so I went for a change/up grade and where's the fun in not playing, it's a hobby.

It looks like you were assisted, and with a minimal , if any, **** taking.

What makes you think you should get diva treatment, ya stroppy noob?
 
Could try turning the wheel full lock to the left and right. I had all of my sensors go off when i disconnected the battery once. Cleared all the faults and the car went back to normal after this.

Cheers big judd, I was trying to avoid faults like this hence I did the work with the battery still connected, but ended with worse. Oh we'll it's all sorted now.
