How long does a MAF sensor normally last? Not sure if mine has ever been replaced i have seen bosch but very expensive then there is pierburg but i think you need synergy box for that one and i have seen some on ebay for £28. Or can i just clean the one thats in now.

I don't think cleaning them is normally that successfull, why not look out for a 2nd hand synergy that has the pierburg maf included. Then you'll get the benefit of the synergy for the price of the bosch.
 
I have just installed a £28 pound one I got on eBay and it fitted ok and it seems to work, my only issue is that the MAF Sensor plug wouldn't click down onto the sensor, it just misses the locking lugs by a fraction of a mm, not sure if this is an issue or not and no idea how long it will last but I also saw the price of the Bosch ones which scared the crap out of me. My only concern now is if the plug comes off after a period of use??? It does seem to be on there quite well but not locked down.
 
Ok thanks for your help Daniel. I was thinking the same dont know if mine is playing up but could keep it for a spare if so
 
Stick to the original Bosch, the cheap ones will not last, cleaning is no good as it will only last for a while & must be cleaned with electrical cleaner only if you had to, but as I say cleaning is no good, if your MAF as failed or is failing unplug it car will run ok but you will use a bit more fuel, a BMW one can be used but you have to use the insert only, cost is less than full unit for a FL1
 
Ok thanks for uour jelpwhwt are the signs of it failing? And can ot be unplugged without removal of air box

Signs of failing can be car sort of going into limp mode, lack of power, I am afraid you would need to remove the air filter cover to unplug the MAF, not that bad though only about 5 minute job,

sloth like response from the go-pedal below 2000 rpm
i.e. major hesitation .. then power comes on above 2000 rpm

And cannot be unplugged without removal of air box

A failing MAF gives sluggish performance because the EDC limits fuel throughput based on air entering the engine. So as the MAF signal gets weaker with age, so the fuel is limited by the EDC in response. Less fuel on a diesel means less power. ;)

So does it effect power just upon pulling off or underload as well?
the engine is 'under-load' the second it's asked to propel the 1600 kilo vehicle
from zero mph to whatever the target speed is ..
the 'load' on the engine will depend on which gear the driver selects ..
how much weight it's trying to accelerate .. and at what timespan the driver wants to get to
the target speed ..

as stated .. the MAF senses air flow mass and speed thru the air intake
just after the air mass has passed thru the air filter
( so a clogged air filter will inhibit air flow .. resulting in a low maf sensor reading
( giving similar 'hesitation' symptoms
( a low maf sensor reading inhibits the amount of fuel the engine management computer
( will give on 'demand' .. 'demand' being how far and at what rate the go-pedal is pushed

on a scale of 1 to 10 .. what's your understanding / knowledge
of how a modern diesel ( or petrol ) engine works ????

is their a problem driving your td4 ?? i.e. performance wise ?
does pulling out into a busy roundabout become a frightening experience
because the engine refuses to respond to the go-pedal .. as in 'hesitation'
if not .. then why do you think the maf sensor needs replacing ??

When im towing it stuggles with hills. Its not as sluggish as you stated. When going above 1800-2000revs it tends to sound like a vacuum cleaner. Im going to recheck all turbo hoses and change vacuum pipes im just trying to cover different areas incase someone has had similar problem

Remember that the TD4 has just 110 Bhp to move it and whatever you hook to the rear, down the road or up that hill. It's not what you would describe as a powerhouse when it comes to towing. My TD4 is much less able to pull an 1800Kg trailer than my D3 was, even though the D3 has an extra 1000Kgs of body weight to move too.
The only real way to tell if power is down, is to do some acceleration tests and compare them to the manufacturers specs.

when checking the vacuum hoses .. cast an eye over the turbo vacuum reservoir as well

usually changed every 12k miles ..

It pulls fine without caravan some hills i need to come down to 2nd gear. I have only had the car 6 months so can only compare it to my 2.0 mark1 zafira whih was pretty much the same. The caravan is just over 1000kg.

Dont get any black smoke get some whiteish sometimes. I changed the turbo filter when i changed the breather. I have noticed if i pull the blue stripe pipe off boost solenoid the noise stops on test run. I tried a different solenoid but same thing.
 
looks like the 2 litre zafira has less bhp than the stock td4/m47r

( although i suppose it depends on how the bhp is measured
( like .. at flywheel .. or road wheels .. or .. )

think about a good remap or synergy2a module ( aka 'ron box' )
for your td4 .. that will up the bhp to about 140 ( or a tad more ) bhp
( be a link in my sig. text )

the td4 be the same lump as used in the bmw 320d ..
with one or two minor differences ..
so can easily be taken up to 150 bhp
no harm to the engine

can even go a bit further on the power output
but with the freelander1 .. it's the transmission drive line
that be the main thing to be cautious with ..
as far as engine power be concerned ..
