Meant to say the Jeep Safaris here are 110's with sides on but no roof or UMM's no sides or roof s driving around with 9 people standing up!..also a point to remember fit non standard running gear and you break it abroad you aint going to fix it quickly not even in the EU now...

I was only going to use different LR bits, e.g. hi cap axles, the only one-off bit is going to be the tailshaft, if the wheelbase is extended.

Absolute madness about those safari trips!
 
Well, Ive done some googling, and found some dimensions for the 110 hi cap (external dimensions and load bay dimensions) so tomorrow Im going to measure up the disco and see wether or not it will fit within the constraints of the wheelbase. Ive also had a great idea, that if I do have to chop the hi cap tub, or if I want more headroom/length when stationary, I might be able to make a winnebago style sliding wall arrangement. Although how Im going to increase space, without having a massive overhang and without extending the wheelbase is a mystery, unless I divided the tub, such that things that are fixed in place go right at the front of the bed, and then it slides out to give 6ft of space when its parked, if that makes sence.
Also, are hi cap 110 axles the same as disco 1 axles? Since payload is quoted as 1245kg for hi cap and I think (6/7)95kg for disco, with the rear axle load limit at 1(6/7)95kg for the disco, not sure about hicap. Is the difference in payload just down to the weight of the body?
Another thing - extended radius arms (aka long arms) these involve relocating the bit where the radius arm mounts into the chassis (moving them closer to the middle). Now logically thinking, this is a chassis modification, withing the wheelbase, so therefore, does it need IVA approval?

Have you googled the dimensions for a 127 hi cap? There is a difference which may save some cutting;)
 
No, but looking at the pictures, the 127/130 hi cap tub is shorter between the wheels, and Im hoping to have as much loadspace between the axles as possible

They are the same distance from the rear to centre of the axle. The difference is at the front which is shorter.
You are cutting the front & leaving the overhang ?
 
Well, Im hoping to NOT cut the front, but Ill need to measure. Its 35 inches (including a gap) from the front of the tub to the axle, which sounds like a fair bit too much to fit within the wheelbase, but Ill have to check

Whipped the tape measure out again. The short version is no, the standard hi cap tub wont fit, but heres why you might think it would.
The tub will fit if you remove the roof and read doors, and everything rearwards of there, if you are very short and dont want to slide the seat back at all. However, with the seat in a normal driving position (for a human, not a mouse) the cut would need to be about halfway along the rear window, pretty much just before the bump in the roof.
The good news is, got an unexpected text from the guy with the ambulance, and now its back in the picture....
 
Well, the ambulance is now out of the picture completely, (unless the cheeky guy who bought it decides to sell it soon) so we're back to square 1 really.
 
Alright. Ive given this some more thorough thought, and I can only see 2 ways of achieving what Im after, and both are far more complex than any reasonable person would deem necessary, but then I do like land rovers, so Im sure you lot will understand.
Option 1 - A completely custom pop up roof, leaving the rest of the disco relatively as-is, so it can be used as a 7 seater, or a 5 door with a decent boot, or a 2 seater with a big boot. O think the easiest way to do this is to buy a pop up roof tent from a campervan, and graft it into the discovery roof. Possibly using the cut out bit of the roof to replace the van roof, or not, depends on what works best.
Option 2 - The chop. Chopping it to a single cab, with maybe some storage space behind the seats, and extending the chassis. Personally, I would make it a flatbed, with all the land rover related stuff going into lockable boxes under the flatbed (i.e. tools, spares, recovery stuff) and then have a demountable camping thing, with all the camping stuff. Probably not the thing that looks like a cut up caravan tacked onto the back of a pickup, more like a steel box with a bed in it, with some draws and a bit of space left for camping chairs, firewood, whatever. Even better if in flatbed form it could be made to accomodate a small car, but that wouldnt be a priority.
Both are very versatile in very different ways. The extended one is of course no use in carrying more than 1 passanger, but is better at everything else.

In other words you want what the Royal Navy had built a few years ago think it was by Foley 4x4...
 
It was by Neatvehicles not Foley and came with a 5th wheel trailer and a demountable back unit depending on the job, it was for survelance diver unit and was sold a few years ago...
