I’ve just bought a 2001 530d and I’d like to put the engine of it into a 2007 2.7 tdv6 discovery 3, I have seen videos of a disco 3 with the m57 in it, so I know it’s possible, has anyone on here down this conversion? Thanks.

I’m actually surprised at the response I’m getting from asking this question.
I’m looking to convert it to m57 as I think it would be a far more reliable engine than the tdv6.
The TDV6 is a very good engine. Some rep on snapping cranks. But isn’t all that common and seems unlikely on a 2.7

Loads of the 2.7’s have done well over 200,000 miles no probs.

What specifically do you think you’d gain with the BMW unit? Not too mention how you’d offset the huge cost and R&D of the conversion.

If you are into Rods and Customs, fine go ahead with it, but otherwise, as you say, why bother?

Isnt there a guy on youtube with a rally D2 with bmw engine?

To the op check out some of the yank forums as sure I have read of different engine swaps, but as always they tend to be light on detail and dont mention how the rest of the cars systems get on.

After seeing the fault on the counter (in two parts) in the service department of a local LR specialist seems a fair question to me

The TDV6 is lightyears ahead of the BMW unit.
The TDV6 is 30% more efficient, and not particularly unreliable, with the exception of the occasional crank failure.
It would be cheaper to have a steel billet crank made for the TDV6, then it'll be more reliable than the BMW boat anchor. ;)

Not too mention the fact that the BMW EDC uses a BMW CAN protocol, but the TDV6 ECM a Ford derived, LR CAN protocol, so the engine computers talk different languages, which basically means that the whole vehicles electronics will crap out, giving COMs errors in all modules that communicate with the engine ECM.

IMHO it's a completely pointless conversion, where you're final goal will be a vehicle that is worse that if it were left as LR made it.

Yes the M57 is a superior unit, It's been done but I imagine it wouldn't be easy..

But no engine conversion ever is.

If you decide to go ahead with it, post the progress ;)

A fair few, but probably only a few % in reality. We only hear of broken cranks, but not the thousands of unbroken cranks.
When you Google it. It seems mostly low mileage 3.0 engines just out or still in warranty. The 2.7 returns almost nothing as a search.

If you look on autotrader/eBay there are loads of D3’s with 200,000+ Miles on the clock.

I’d suggest the crank issue is pretty minor with the 2.7

Also let’s not forget the 2.7 was also used in Jaguars, Citroens and Peugeots too. Basically there are a lot of them out there.

And it’s not as if the M57 is immune from issues either.
