:rulez:HI , i have just sent my R/R 4.6 v8 2000 vogue in for mot and theyv'e rang me and said its failed on emmissions , when i asked for info they said its failed both on petrol side and lpg , so they said they would have to do a diagnostic check .. cost £35.00 + vat , now im not opposed to paying this but what happens then when theyv'e done this , does this mean it will pass or is more cost involved ??? also what are the acceptable emmissioins as the vechicle has just had full service with filters on both sides i.e. lpg and petrol ?????????? any help would be most welcome cheers MOZZ :confused::confused:

Doing a diagnostic check is just so they can see if there are any related error codes. This will not cure the issue nor provide a pass certificate. The error has to be rectified first.

I don't see how it can fail an emissions test running on LPG. Unless your burning oil.

HI ,WAMMERS ITS only done k80,000 and runs like a dream and excellent service history and no oil burning , so i dont know what the results are yet .. waiting for a call from them ??? cheers wammy ....mozz:beer2:

You need the emissions data sheet that should come with the failure notice to work out by how much it has failed. It is theoretically possible for an LPG conversion to fail on emissions if it starts on petrol and then switches over, but running pure LPG I would be very surprised.
Two very simple and cheap ideas if it hasn`t failed by much - get an engine management additive specifically desgined to reduce emissions, add it to the oil, run the engine up to warm (say 20 mile run at least) and try and make sure it is re-tested whilst still warm - emissions are nearly always worse on a cold engine. Unless you get a free or discounted re-test I`d also be very tempted to get it re-tested at somewhere that has a reputation for understanding four wheel drives, if the current test station is a general garage.
Hope that helps, Ian

hi all, just got a call saying the diagnostic check on emmission mot failure is that the lamba sensor on exhaust is fxxxcxxd anyone guide me to source it and price ???? cheers mozz:drum::confused:

hi kooky its the 1st one pre cat , quoted £109.00 but cant guarantee that it would pass ???? said it could be the cat ????? so i said i havent got a bottomless pit of money so what happens then ? he shrugged his shoulders ,so far its cost
£35.00 for mot fail notice
£47.00 for diagnostic labour

am i entitled to take it elsewhere for mot ?????? it could work out cheaper ????? cheers mozz :rulez:

does it not need to be tested how its presented?Eg if on lpg then tested on lpg?

You've got two cats though with a lamda sensor in front of each one. You may even have lamdas behind the cats too not sure about that. Just want to make sure the defective one gets replaced and not the working one - at least I assume the other one is working.

In theory you could get rid of the cats if you're being tested on lpg but there's a bit of a debate about that. There is no way you should fail an emmisions test on lpg even with no cats.

You might find that the tester might not know how to turn the lpg on - I had that problem the last time mine was tested. I don't know what he did to it, but after about 40 minutes he realised it was lpg and came and asked me how to turn it on - it usually switches itself but it didn't that time.

I was told when I took my old Classic (single point LPG) in for a MOT that they had to test it how it was presented so that it would be a good idea if I drove in to the garage on LPG, hint hint nudge nudge.

Have you seen the print out of the emmission test?? Did it fail on Lambda, CO or HC or a combination of the three.

get rid of the cats, i have, take the exhaust off and bash the cats out with a plumbers spring and a suitable thinish bar, be careful though as the stuff inside is alledgedly carcinogenic.

get the software and lead for the lpg and set the switchover to as low as it will go, mine accepts 1300rpm as a minimum and its set to switch over on rpms going down. basically as soon as you start it and rev it it wil switch.

now when you go to the mot place, tell them its lpg and thats how you want it testing. they have to test it on lpg if it is presented on lpg. the above ensure it will be on lpg.

if the no1 lambda is shot, just switch em over. i'm not sure about newer systems but the older single points only use feed back from one lambda sensor. ergo if it is no1 and its dead, try it with no2 in no1's place and hope no2 is a gud en.

also take it somewhere else cos these idiots sound a bit dumb!!

oh and stay with them the whole time. dont let them make you wait in the 'waiting area' and get some loppy clothes on and mucky hands!!

you know what they say at Fairy: hands that do dishes know fcuk all about M.O.T's.

(actually i'm not sure they say that at Fairy but i thort they might during thier cofee break)

just thought, if they are diagnosing and it was running on lpg, no1 lambda may not show up, it wouldnt on my software as its switched off from the car and diverted to the lpg ecu!!

it was a quirk that took me ages to figure out as i was trying to get reading from the car!!

lol!!

One or two points makes me laugh here.
1. Bash the centre out of the cats  that's several hundred quids worth of damage you're recomending:eek:
2. Take it to another MOT station:eek: the light will go red at VOSA for sure:D
3. You are only allowed to watch the test from the viewing area, you are not allowed to engage the tester in conversation.
