hi all i fitted a 19j 2.5td into my series but my 4 speed box has let go now and im thinking of putting a lt77 from a defender in. fitting is not a problem but do i need to match the box up with defender diffs or will it run ok on series diffs with the ratios and all cheers for any help
 
Some one who knows more will be along, but look carefully for shift stick position. Diffs will be fine, are you thinking of hanging a series transfer box on it or going full time 4WD? You will probably have to move the engine forward 4" if it is in an 88. Take a look at Ashcroft's web page some details on there to help you.
 
cheers divie stick position im not too worried about i can fabricate around that and to be honest i had not thought about swapping the transfer boxes over but that sounds a good idea do they bolt straight on ???cos then i could keep my 2wd option and free wheeling hubs ,i mainly use my landy on the road its my daily drive and i thought the 5 speed box would give me a bit better economy.by swapping transfer boxes on the lt77 for a series one would that still keep my ratios ok??

Just put an overdrive on it if you want a 5th gear, lot less hassle than what you are looking at and keeps the series correct.

you can either use lt77 and series t/box in 4th gearing would be indentical to series box, or you can get a kit to alter lt230 to rwd mode and 4wd when diff lock selected, a 19j would take 3.54 diffs as well but try as is first
 
Permanent 4wd on series axles is not recommended due to having uj rather than cv joints on front axle. But having the gear stick in an odd position will look like a bodge. Just rebuild your series box and fit an o/d

How would fitting an LT77 make any vehicle Permanent 4WD?? surely that's what the transfer box does??? :confused:
 
cheers for the comments guys ,i think im gonna get an lt77 and put on my series transfer box for the job because overdrives have gone way too expensive but does anyone have a defender lt77 in the shed and could give me the length of the box from the front face of the bell housing to the rear of the casing where the transfer bolts on so i can get an idea of where the transfer levers will be sitting,also does it need to be a defender lt77 because im sure i read somewhere ldv vans and old rovers used lt77 boxes would these be the same ratios and input shaft length i know the disco box has too long an input shaft but any help would be great

I has a fender LT77 box in the workshop. I'll stick a tape measure on it, Tuesday. & report back.
 
Ok I have a LT 77 lined up has anyone stuck a series transfer box onto a lt 77 if so how did it go,straight forward enough or do you need any special bits making does the output shaft of t he box match the input of the transfer box etc any helpplease
 
As a gearing solution in your opinion would you go for Ashcroft high ratio transfer box or 3.54 diffs?

for me it's 3.54 diffs with 200tdi and Series box, 7.50 tyres and overdrive in both of my Series' as mine are daily drivers, the overdrive is used as a splitter when needed, i don't offroad that often where i need an ultra low ratio so it suits me fine

i've a couple of mates with the high ratio transfer box, you lose the ability to fit an overdrive but retain the original low ratio for offroad driving which they're happy about

the Ashcroft LT77 conversion plate allows the matching of the gearbox to the original Series transfer box which requires you to move the engine 4" forwards but retains the original length propshafts

or you can fit the LT77 and LT230, there is at least two different ratio LT230 to choose from depending on your road use requirements (both have the same low ratio), the talk of it not being suitable for use with a Series front axle is mostly cobblers as i know of at least two folks who have been running them for a couple of years with only minor kickback through the steering at low speed tight manouvers and not breaking halfshafts on a daily basis, remember an LT230 has a diff incorporated to allow different prop speeds to the front and rear axles

the only thing with the LT230/LT77 combo is the requirement for at least one custom length prop, a correctly fitting tunnel and either modified or replacement floorplates and the handbrake linkage to be got round

the final things you'll find is you'll need modified gearbox mounts (or the LT77 mounts) and you'll not be able to remove the handbrake drum without removing the gearbox as it sits too close to the crossmember behind it (you could possibly make that removable)

i've looked at other folks conversions/write-ups quite a bit and had a little test drive in one with thoughts of going down this route sometime in the future myself, i already have the gearbox and transfer box sat in my spares along with a few other bits, i'm just waiting on the right donor vehicle to fit them into rather than modify one that i already own as it'll be a chassis up build where i can take my time to fit all the modifications properly
