Hope you can help,

First let me apologise for my ignorance on this subject.

I recently acquired a P38 4.6 with an lpg system. I know nothing about them but have been lead to believe it is a single point system? Is this system interchangable with petrol? meaning can it be switched over to run on petrol at any time. The only thing I seem to have is a little box with a series of lights that define how much lpg there is in the tank.
My reason for asking this is I am looking to take the car to France in September and would hate to get caught running out of Lpg and have nowhere close to fill up, I have the various maps showing the stations available but due to my time of travel these may not be open. But for my own piece of mind I would like to Know the ins and outs anyway.
I don't have the systems make to hand (I'm at work) but if required could post it later.

next to your lpg gauge (the little box with lights), there should be a switch where you could choose between a) run on petrol b) run on lpg and c) auto swich over from petrol start up to lpg after you rev it to 2000 rpm...at least mine is set up this way...

You may find that there are more stations with lpg in france than here in the uk...
 
mine is similar, i have the option of petrol or lpg, when i select lpg it allways starts on petrol then switches to lpg as soon as theres 4 degree C temp in cooland and/or i rev it to 2000rpm. changing from one to another while driving is fine and usually you cant tell the difference.

thanks for the replies but I'm getting confused now
On the unit with the lights there is a switch one end has a "G" the other
has what looks like a visual of a fuel pump?
Anyway I ran my engine in idle on the drive with the "G" selected and it started and ran fine, when I switched it the the other my indicator lights on the unit went to one red and the engine cut out. Cannot find any other switches nearby that would change from Lpg to petrol.
The make is impco installed in 05 if this helps

hi Jon.....on my system, the lights indicator shows a series of green and yellow lights when on lpg, and a single red if its on petrol...

yes my petrol tank is around 1/4 full, your indicator seems the same as mine green yellow and one red. but when I press the button to put on the red light, the engine cuts out. Sounds as though I have a problem changing over?
 
On my car only one red light shows when it is switched to petrol only, or the green lights show when it is set to change over automatically. If i try to change from gas to petrol while standing and just reving up it does cut out, all the lpg cars i have owned do but they will start up again on the turn of the key. If i am travelling along and i try to change i get what feels like a small misfire just for a split second, and then its ok this again has been the same with all the lpg cars i have owned.The change to lpg from petrol though is seemless.

this is interesting, i can switch from gas to petrol when engine at idle and it dont skip a beat, you wouldnt know its happened if you didnt see me do it!
i have a controller that sits into the spare switch hole at the left of the panel opposite end to light switch, it has a single red light for petrol and a yellow light when on gas, the yellow light flashes green when engine started as it on petrol but will go to gas when hot/fast enough, the amount of gas is shown by 4 (i think) green lights down the right hand side of this unit, as it gets used up sp the lights extinguish till im left with one red for empty, but i can drive another 50 miles when this comes on

Sounds like you have no gas
 
I do have gas, and I have petrol.

When I start up with the gas indicator on everything is fine, but when I press the switch to turn off the gas gas the engine stops.
 
I have both gas and petrol !

Took it for a spin this morning running on gas, pressed the switch to turn this off and the engine spluttered and lost power. Flicked the switch back on and it picked up again and ran normal. Does this mean I can only run on gas? Do systems exist that will not allow you to select petrol or gas?

My switch is like yours 4 green lights 1 red yellow light flashing until it switches over from petrol to gas. The change over is dependent on the water temperature so to ensure the gas can be vapourised properly.
It has always been my understanding that on the change over whichever way then there is a split second when the one fuel switches off and the other starts which can cause the engine to cut out at idle. At least thats what i have always been told.
Redrange what system is yours on, mine is a Bi-gas multipoint, i have located someone who will sell me the program and leads so i can fiddle with it and i am looking to get it when my finances are a bit better.

as i said when i switch from gas to petrol all i hear is the click of the switch, the engine dont change its idle at all!!!

this is madness guys, im copying and pasting the web address from an english page and when i save it to the thread it comes out in italian????? what the f**k is going on?
if you google tartarini you will find an english version, it just wont copy in english, help! my head hurts...........

hello mate i have a bi gas system and i will give you a disc to operate the adjustments via your laptop , the lead can be bought here Tinley Tech Limited Sequential Gas Injection Systems you will also need the serial lead adaptor if your laptop doesm`t have a serial lead port hope this helps.
my system changes over without even a blip the only way to tell what you are running on is to check the lights on the switch , sound like 01gringo has a petrol fault some place .

Hi I also have the IMPCO setup in my 4.0se. Yours can't just be running on gas as it would need to start on petrol until the water temp in the car was warm enough for the gas work properly in the system,, so it seems that some petrol at least is getting through for initial warming up stage. The guys on here are all pretty clued up and I would take their advice as to what to do next. As for driving in France, LPG or GPL as they call it is available nearly everywhere cheapest at the supermarkets but make sure you get the adaptor before you go
 
i just thought, it sounds similar to what i had, engine would start from cold on petrol the go to gas as it should, to try and start on petrol when hot was nearly impossible, it wouldnt run om petrol when hot. so if your switching off the gas when hot it stalls due to a fault on petrol when hot (maybe)

i found a problem with the connector at the air flow meter, give it some movement and see how it goes! i sparyed some electrical switch and contact cleaner into all my connectors and i have had no problem since.
