What is the difference between these two systems? I have been told by my insurance i need to have LPG - A or they will not insure me. I dont not currently have a certificate as the pervious owner does not know who did the job. Ive looked at the system which is mounted where the spare wheel normally is in the boot, and there is no markings or anything to indicate who fitted it.
Does anyone have any idea what the differnces are, or where to look for markings of the system and what i can do to get mine certificated

my insurance have cancelled my policy as i cant provide a certificate, so my ownership spans a very short and troublesome week

I know this may be a simple suggestion but did you ask your insurance company to try and help you out at all here?? Ask what you need to provide?? If you can't provide the said document(s)/certificate then ask them what you need to do or where you need to take the vehicle to get this document(s)/certificate?? Make them help you a little if you can...

Another suggestion is to ask the previous owner who s/he insured the vehicle with and then try insuring with them??

sorry if these suggestions are totally useless etc, its just what i would try...

The insurance are not very helpful. They do not have anyone who can give me any technical info on the matter. They just say that i need a certificate of installation and it has to be LPG A and not just LPG, but they can not tell me what the difference is or where to get one, except they wont insure just LPG or if i dont get one.
They have been very unwilling throughout as an example of this is - they also said had to get a letter from land rover listing my modifications or i wouldnt be insured, to which land rover charged me £50!!! to write a letter saying it has after market wheels and an lpg sytem
The previous owner will not return calls or emails, and lives two hours away for me to go visit. The only thing i got from him when i brought it is that he never declared the lpg, i guess he knew why

It all sounds as though you have had a bit of a terrible time with it all!! I have done a bit of digging online, and, im not sure whether it will help but...

the site looks quite useful and does offer quite a few tips on owning a vehicle that runs on LPG.

LPG A is the LPG association. some installers of lpg systems are members of this association, some aren't.

insurance companies generally like to see a certificate of conformity issued by someone in the LPGA.

if your system is unknown and without a cert. take it to a LPGA installer, get them to check the installation and issue you a certificate of conformity.

i'm not surprised by the lack of help from your insurance, however ask them if they except you having your system inspected by a member of the LPGA.

no need to sell the car!!

the www.boostlpg.co.uk website was very useful, i got a link for the LPGA association and emailed them. They comfirmed what some of you have put that a safety certificate can be provided by a LPGA approved dealer, which is like an 'MOT' for the systems.
So the good new is ive got it booked in for next monday.
The bad news my insurance wont insure me till i provide the certificate!!??

Ah cool, im glad the site I found helped you out a bit :)

Your insurance company sounds all rather unfriendly and unhelpful?? Who are you with?? I insured my Range Rover with NFU Mutual who were absoulutley brilliant and were really helpful with getting everything sorted (it was all a bit complicated as i'm quite a young driver etc etc etc) and while I dont have an LPG P38a i'm sure they would be more helpful (and possibly cheaper) than your current insurance people.

I've only had my P38a just over a week now and I am a total fan of it and i'm glad that you have decided to keep yours, they really are great machines!!

Sorry to hear about your insurance problems

I have to say that your broker or insurance company are just lazy, there are lots of cars with the conversion so they must have at least some experience

Anyway

I found Swiftcover http://www.swiftcover.com to be the cheapest quote for my 4.6 Vogue by far, and they are not even bothered about the certificate

There are quite a few others who don't need it as I found when I did a bit of on-line searching when I bought the car at the end of last year

It's great filling up for under £30!!

Got my LPG inspected today and sadly it failed badly. Turns outs to be a bad home DIY job, with a lot of incorrect piping and the tank held down by one nut and bolt!!! So no wonder why the previous owner wont return my calls
It is salvagable ive been told but with a lot of man hours involved


So a lesson to anyone buying, check for a certificate first

well that sucks about the LPG system, are you going to go ahead and salvage things?? Is there any rough idea of the cost involved??

Yes im going to keep my faith in the car and go ahead:) . Ive booked it in for thursday. The garage reckons around £350 plus another £55 for a re-test for the certificate.
Out of interest how much if u dont mind me asking is your insurance ( PM if you prefer). As im a young ish driver myself, and may try NFU mutual and also mikes recommendation of switfcover

Update
Got the car back today with an LPGA certificate. So im finally insured!!
So heres to finally enjoying driving it!
Anyone reccommend some nice off road spots near milton keynes?
 
Glad you got sorted, it cost me £850 to get my LPG system certificated on a 4.2 LSE 93 Classic. I did get the car fairly cheap so I reckon I am still in pocket.

Out of interest how far are you able to travel on a tank full? Mine is only returning about 130 miles which just aint good enough
 
Ive got a 95 L tank but it only fills up with 72 Litres. I get around 160 miles around town to 200 miles on long trips

Ouch! that's not great. From my quick calculations using your figures @ 160 miles = 10mpg! @ 200 miles = 12 mpg. Gulp!

Using Mat B price - 48ppl = &#163;34.56 for 72l in the tank. Taking the figure of 10 mpg that works out at &#163;17.28 per 100 miles on LPG.

I get around 500 miles from my tank of diesel averaging about 28mpg. I normally let it run down and fill up with about 80 litres. That's &#163;72 for the tank @ 90ppl. Therefore 100 miles costs me &#163;14.40

Not making any point in particular, it's just interesting!

hhhmm i wish i looked into it more before buying. Ive let it run totally empty before and it still only fills up to 72 litres. And LPG cost 47.9 where i live!!!!!
Jst started a new thread to see how other people get on, as ive read on an american forum that with the same make tank they get 270 miles on average

Just revised the figures a little as I didn't realise you were only using 72l, and taking into acount the price of LPG (I was only guessing!)

Still, works out about the same give that LPG was more expensive than I thought!

must be a PITA having to fill up so often :(
 
Just seems to be my area that charge so much. It costs me around &#163;35 fo fill up in milton keynes yet in doncster it cost me &#163;22!!!
I dont know how they can justify such high prices
Yes a right PITA, lol, especially in this cold weather. It takes so long to fill up on LPG its atleast twice as slow filling compared to petrol or diesel
