Can anyone tell me is all lower tailgates are interchangeable? ie would a later one fit external handle Vs internal etc, are all external handle ones the same as each other?

Perfect sense! As I'm sure you are aware these no longer available new but when in stock there were four different part nos. RTC6342 & 6344 also MXC3153 & 9489 (plus a repair/skin panel RA1210) but as far as I know the actual 'gate is the same & the part nos. relate to the fittings.

Be careful when getting a replacement. 1990 onwards the fixing bolts do not line up with earlier hinges and you will only be able to fix the tailgate with one bolt in each hinge. The edge of the floor also does not have the raised lip and extra seal arrangement except at the corners. If you fit a later tailgate it will hit these corners and damage the paint and the bottom of the tailgate. You have to bash these corners inwards before fitting.

The later tailgates also do not have the circular rubber seals and foam that seal the hinges.

Would all the ones with the external handle be the same do you think?
