Hi everyone,

Im currently pulled over in a lay-by with a bit of trouble!

When I started up my 1988 landover 90 about 2 miles ago it struggled to start as if the battery was dying. I got it going but it keeps loosing power, and eventually dyes. It then struggles to get going again. After a very short while it then looses power and dyes again.

It's a 200 from a discovery in a 1988 defender

Any ideas?

How much fuel is in it? Have you tried removing the wire from the fuel solenoid, cleaning it and replacing it?
 
Could be fuel starvation. Remove the fuel filter and see how much fuel is in it. Easy roadside check.
 
Is it possible that you’ve got a dodger battery/loose fan belt/damaged water pump? They can all contribute to negative power from your battery. You described it feeling like there was a battery fault when you set off. Maybe try get a jump.
 
Thanks for the help everyone, I've parked up safely and got a lift home for now. Im going back tomorrow, I'm think that the fuel filter is the problem.

Probably the lift pump or air getting in somewhere if the filter isn't full
 
For future reference if a thread like this crops up in a section other than LZIR please report it so I'll get email notification.

Fwiw now it does sound like fuel rather than electrical.
 
Hi all, do you think it could possibly be an incorrect reading on the fuel gauge saying I've got fuel when infact I'm trying to run on empty? I've checked my fuel filter and it had fuel in it didn't seem to be completely full though.
 
We had this (1991 200tdi). We get 125 miles or thereabouts for each of the top three quarters of the fuel gauge, so I thought I could get the same from the last quarter. 15 miles later we were at the side of the A11, family waiting while I walked back to the nearest service station. Now I reset the trip counter every time I fill up, and make sure I put in some more when I get to 300, or before.

A partially blocked fuel filter will still have fuel in it. Mine did last week.
 
IT never does any harm to put a couple of gallons in and change the filter.
Do you have the sedimenter on the rear chassis?

IF you had fuel in the tank ..... Then lift pump is suspect then in my book.... a search on here will assist - also worth putting a piece of clear pipe in the system to show any air in the fuel ....

Sedimenters are cheap enough new, and IMHO an essential part of the system, so as MHM suggests, have a nosy at it ....:)
