Help please,1999 disco2 td5 10 p engine,it is throwing water out of the expansion bottle, new head gasket, with steel dowels head bolts oiled as they should according to Erling head bolts are new,new rad, thermostat and expansion cap,new water pump, water was put in according to landrover, when I say throwing water out it is more of a fast drip, also when I accelerate I can hear a slight gurgling.

Oh dear that's a lot work and expense.
Any way Is the expansion bottle fill to the correct 'cold' level? and the gurgling, usually from the heater, is a sign of air still remaining in the cooling system and trapped in the matrix after bleeding.

When I did the rebuild filled the water up till it came out of the top hose with the header tank above the engine, ran up to temp let it cool then re filled to the cold level. If there is still air in the system would this push water out.

Should do as the system is self venting, but the matrix is the highest point so air can be trapped the air could remain and then disappear at any time, Ive found that after draining and refilling very slowly there isn't a problem with trapped air in the matrix so done just that for years.

Isolated the heater matrix filled very slowly put a long hose on expansion tank then into a bottle and drove normally for about 10 miles and caught 1/4 litre of coolent, been told today it sounds like I need a new head ( discovery) not me.

Ok but I'm I missing something, why did you isolate the matrix and where on the expansion bottle did the long hose that went a bottle fit?? as Isnt any spare outlets the expansion bottle or shouldn't be.

Isolated the matrix as it is a good place for air to hide(lol)the overflow pipe on the expansion bottle

Allowing the coolent into the matrix when filling the system slowly should disperse any air.
The standard cooling system is 'closed citcuit' so any venting is via a valve in the expansion bottle cap and not a pipe, as earlier vehicles had with a metal expansion bottle and a metal spring cap.

In other words u shouldn't have an overflow pipe

When the expansion cap vents the coolent comes out of the expansion bottle via a little overflow pipe that normally runs down the side of the inner wing area,I connected a longer pipe on to this to monitor how much coolent was being lost via the expansion cap.

Ok I was thinking your system would be similar to the V8s hose numbers 5 & 8 in the link below.
So, what u have is a symptom of a head gasket failure but also just over filling, unfortunately maybe time to get the coolent tested.

When the head was being done, did you take off the radiator?

The reason I ask, is that there are two heater pipes at the bottom left of the rad as you look at the engine bay, mixing them up might cause a problem,

Or not, but worth checking

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the ideas, quick update decided to buy a good second hand head, drove to middlewich about 25 miles and lost about 2 litres of fluid, the guy who was selling the head had a quick look, tried to pressure the water systym and found the expansion tank filler neck did not feel right and replaced it with a spare one he had( didn't charge for it)the Landy did not lose any fluid on the way home, come to the conclusion td5s are more complicated than women lol.

I had a blown radiator caused by a non lifting expansion tank cap. Forget checking yours, get a new one from a LR dealer - NOT aftermarket, even if it is from a reputable maker such as Valeo. Having changed my rad, I began losing coolant through the overflow pipe then the top hose blew off. We got away with it and I was scaring myself stupid with thoughts of head gaskets or worse when I got this tip. Changed the cap and the problem has gone, I don't have to top up the coolant between changes and I live in Australia! Good Luck
