My original tank was 10 years old before it cracked round the top and leaked ( old style with small cap ) , I now have the new one with improved cap ( genuine landrover parts about £35 )

I would just drain old tank & fit new tank & cap then refill tank with neat antifreeze ( as you have diluted with water top-ups ) , Then see how it goes if level is ok after a while then you can drain/flush/bleed the system if you like ? maybe in warmer weather ?

The problem with that is I don't know what type of anytifreeze is in there already. Would it be safe to take the risk of mixing types?

Don't mix them, the different types of coolants (green or orange) chemically react and form a gel rather than a liquid and will cause major issues.

So I'm best to empty the system when the expansion tank arrives and start from scratch with fresh antifreeze?

You did state that orange was in there so it should be safe just to top-up new coolant tank for now !
If the coolant in there WAS blue then i would drain & flush !

If it's green / blue then don't mix with pink /orange/red antifreeze. It will mix ok but blue antifreeze is glycol based so it down specs the OAT stuff the factory had to use. I always use Blucol but i'v a 50 gallon drum of the stuff to use up!!
