Our 2005 freelander td4 sport is slowly loosing water. Iv been topping it up with water but I'm concerned that I'm slowly diluting what antifreeze is in there and since we've only had the car since August I'm unsure what was in there in the first place.

Until I find the problem is it best to empty the system and fill it with the correct antifreeze (is there a specific type?) and then keep a backup bottle of the same dilution in the boot to keep it topped up?

Thanks

DO NOT USE STOP LEAK it is not a fix, it is a get you home bodge, and will probably cause other problems elsewhere in time.

check the header tank for cracks round the filler cap thread. usually fine hairline cracks/crazing, which open up under pressure and release some anti freeze, maybe as a vapour, look for deposits and/or crystals around the top of the filler tank.

the anti freeze you need is OAT which is USUALLY orange in colour. Check the colour of the anti freeze currently in the engine. If it is orange, buy OAT.

good luck

Ok I'll do that.

Is there a specific type of antifreeze I'll need to use?

Yes - you need OAT (Organic Acid Technology) anti-freeze. Usually it's reddish-pink to avoid confusion with the older spec blue stuff.

Be sure to get the concentrated stuff - not the ready diluted which is a rip off anyway.

How much is it losing every day?

I take it you've checked all the hoses and the expansion tank cap?

And the tank itself for cracks around the filler neck?

Singvogel.

Just been and had a look. There's loads of hairline cracks on the water tank where under the cap where the thread starts.

The antifreeze in there now is an orange colour.

Is my best option to buy a new tank, empty and flush the system then full with new antifreeze?

also the correct way to fill the header tank is to fill it when cold up the top mark ,can you see where any water has gone down the engin as it would leave a trace of orange it could be the hose that comes of the metal pipes that go behind the engin

That looks to be a better price.

I take it that 'british parts UK' is a different company from 'britpart' then?

I have a few minor cracks just starting on mine - no leaks yet - but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Yes not a britpart company afaik

it was an example just to show that they are, indeed, the same part for all FL's.

i got one when i updated my cooling system and it works well, but as with everything on mine it is monitored regular. :)

Thankyou everyone for your replies.

I will be buying a new expansion tank this week and will flush and refill the system.

Is that halfords antifreeze defo the right type?

Well I read the spec on Halfrauds web-site and it says that it's OAT - but check on the actual container yourself when you buy it.

I'm using Miller's Alpine which is the same colour - says OAT on the pack and should be the same stuff.

SV.

Just looked at mine and yes it's starting to crack, perhaps we should do a survey (and perhaps get a cheaper price for forum members).

I bought the Halfords advanced stuff concentrated, it is the right gear;)
