Fantastic, very well informative posts and photos too boot! And here was me thinking I had issues with mine, however, looking at all the work you have done on this, mine seem trivial in comparison.

Great tip regarding the door check straps, I'll investigate mine now the door cards are removed. The only thing which has annoyed me about removing the door cards is that I didn't know they were like a fibre glassy type material on the inside. Needless to say, the ends of all my fingers are full of little barbs off the damn things. After nearly scrubbing the ends of my fingers off with some sand paper, I've got most of them out! lol. Note to self: Next time, wear disposable gloves!!!!!

Keep up the good work mate, its a credit to ya! And Thanks for your advice!
Thanks for the kind words bud.

Hi guys
Just bought me another Freelander for a project car. Lots of pics of VCU refurb, fuel tank cradle repair etc.
Early 2015 I bought a 2004 K series Freelander from a dealer, it had full MOT, new window regulators, new diff bushes and decent tyres but because it was a K series I got it for under £1500. I thought I had done well getting such a fresh car for such small money.
Well that ain't nothin. Get a load of this, the newcomer is on the right.

Gertrude is a 2002 K series with 120k on the clock but with a replacement engine at 60k (some issue caused by the garage during a service), she comes with 2 newish tyres, two fairly worn tyres 3 dodgy windows a new clutch and possible head gasket failure (yet drove home 20 miles no probs) but the body is rust free. She has sat around untaxed or MOT'd for three years so covered in algae and moss but clean paintwork under it all.

Guess what I paid for her?

No go on guess

Ah go on

Go on, go on, go on, go on.

Ah your no fun atall.

£280! Yip thats right, £280 and she drove home (allegedly ocifer) no bother. In fact I would say she drives smoother than my 04 car.

I haven't decided what to do with it yet but will get her MOT'd and take it from there. I would love to put a 1.8T engine in like Disco_mikey did and take her off roading. I think the extra torque from a turbo would make a massive difference to the driveability in sticky conditions.
In the meantime I am going through her sorting all the issues and my goal is to have her running serviced and MOT'd for under £600.

First job when I got her home was the One Wheel Up Test. Which she of course failed miserably with a time close to 2 minutes, but at least it moved. My other car was pretty well seized solid when I got her. Anyway the propshaft will be off soon so I can have a go at refurbing the VCU. The last one I did is still working fine.

Next job was checking the coolant which appeared to have no antifreeze, turns out it was full of K seal (or such crap) instead, So gave it a quick flush with the hose and I refilled with antifreeze. I should say at this point the car was advertised with possible HGF as it had "lots of steam coming out the exhaust". I'm hoping the guy had panicked and threw in K seal when he saw the steam but it is just condensation. Time will tell but I hope it was just because it had been lying for so long.

She needs the windows sorting, disks and pads but otherwise I can't find much wrong that a good clean wouldn't fix. I is a happy bunny. :)
What should the 1 wheel up test result be? Under a minute?

OK so doing a wee bit of work to prep Gerty for the MOT and finally got p!ssed off with the HDC warning light so decided to sort it properly. I took the dash apart and used some of that there magic invisible light fixing tape on the inside. Worked a treat, no more nasty warning light and it only took an hour or so. :p

Thanks buddy not sure how excellent it was but it was a lot of fun.
I think I hit lucky with the MOT guy. My son came with me and waited until we were down the road a bit to say how he nearly forgot to check the number plate light on his car. Doh!, guess what I forgot to check and yes it was faulty. The MOT guy either didn't spot it or didn't care. Then when I was sitting waiting to go in I asked my son for the V5 doc and he looked at me. Yip we forgot that too. Once again the MOT guy didn't ask for it so no probs.
I guess it was just my lucky day. :)
Even better there was no sign of overheating or fluid loss so still waiting for the head gasket to show signs it has failed.

Really enjoyed reading this thread. Great work. You are going to end up with a real bargain motor there. And congrats on the MOT.

Now you can get about in it I would love to learn how responsive your refurbished VCU is on slippy stuff - pulling trailers on wet gass etc, and does it feel right pulling away fast from junctions etc - any wheelspin? Your one wheel up numbers are very free - if it still performs well you've built a goodun

Good question dfossil, I get momentary wheel spin while pulling away on a slippy wet road but it takes a lot of provocation to do that. Yesterday I was driving on snow and didn't feel any wheelspin at all so the VCU is working. I also used the car to tow a land leveller around a sand school and it felt as if 4wd was working as it should. Unfortunately I think I have a problem which might be the reason it is so free. When prepping it for MOT I was crawling underneath and noticed there is a leak in the VCU so I will have to take it off again to fix that. I guess it is possible lack of pressure in the VCU might cause it to be so loose but even with that it is working well enough for every day driving.

Having an odd issue with Gerty atm. On the way home from the MOT I noticed a rattle from the front left suspension which wasn't there before. I think the MOT here in NI is so harsh on suspension it must have caused the issue.
I replaced the tre's and issue still there so will probably replace wishbones next but the odd thing is I can't feel any issue with the wheels off the ground so not 100% certain where the fault is.
Not too worried about replacing the wishbones as they are well past their best but would like to know what the problem is instead of just throwing parts at it.
Might jack it up again tomorrow and have another go with a crow bar to see whats going on.

Awesome work @Alibro You are quite the expert! Any chance you could come over to Cardiff and help me with the issues I'm having with my KV6!? Check out my thread... https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/v6-engine-replacement.296524/#post-3689787
LOL, Expert? Me? No, not even close. I'm just too stupid to no when to stop.
Regarding your car unfortunately from what I've heard a V6 ****ing out water is a bad thing. The K4 is a much simpler engine and a lot easier to work on.
You might be best to cut your losses and sell it for spares/repairs. Might get up to £500 for it to put towards a replacement.

Thanks Alibro. It looks like I'll have to sell my V6 at this rate.. Gutted!

I'll look forward to reading your future posts. Good luck with Gerty!

Thanks mate. As with all cars if the cost if fixing it is more than it will be worth after doing the work you have to ask is it worth it. Especially with engine swaps when you could be putting in an worse engine than the one you have.
