Hi, My 300tdi 110 defender is going to take me n the misus on a 400 mile trip to Cornwall in a few weeks, I have limited mechanical experience but have changed the oil/air filters & changed the oil in both axles. Anything else which I should do before our trip apart from save up for the deisel !

Thanks

A group of 10 of us did wales a couple of years ago, only one broke a diff (big tyres). Took out the shaft's & drove home. I've done Scotland (1200 miles all round) with no problems.
I'd say fill up with derv & enjoy.

FFS, i bought a landy on saturday and drove it to poland from manchester on sunday, just have a look around under it, are the brake pads ok, are both props' UJs ok and nuts tight, is everything topped up? and away you go... you have breakdown cover if you need it- stop worrying and enjoy.

Stop worrying just usual checks and she should be fine. If your worried about doing 400 miles there must be something seriously wrong with it.

Just drive, mine usually only does trips of 160 miles or more at a time. Max I have done in 1 sitting was from chesterfield to les coches in the alps which was just over a thousand miles each way.

Have a crawl around underneath and make sure you don't have any excessive oil leaks, props look tight and your brake pads have some life on em and go for it.

Makes sense to have breakdown cover but I view that as sensible in any car not just land rovers

Last year I drove mine from the South of France to the UK and back. Did just over 2500 miles. Never entered my mind that it might break down. My tool kit consisted of a roll of duck tape, a hammer and a screw driver. Never needed any of them. When I got back I went on to do a total of around 5000 miles before I gave it a service. If its road worthy you shouldn't have a problem.

70% of Landys ever built are still in use, that I think says it all! Plus do the checks stated earlier, just enjoy it :) :)

Sorry to high jack, I've been considering a 3000 mile trip to south Spain but I carnt use mine with out something braking I've changed almost everything and that's not taking the **** I'm back to the start and replacing everything again, mine prity much only goes off road,

I've been thinking of buying a disco 300 tdi as I know mine brakes as It gets well used off road if I bought one that's been a daily driver I think it may be more up for the trip.

What kind of things are breaking 2nd time round? Any warranties you can claim from manufacturers?

If it's being used Off Road then second time failures are not unusual Christ in on four or five times that on replacements of bearings and brakes props and so on

I'm just lucky I can leave it on my drive until I have time to fix it as I don't use it every day,

Warrentys ain't worth the paper there written on as they will just g " oh we founded and water on it therefore you must have been off road so you warrenty invalid"

Or like adventure 4x4 at Leeds said when my prop slider kept seizing " it carnt be broke they never brake but if it has we won't replace it as I saw you off roading last week at Rothwell"
