My tachometer/rev counter on my N reg Discovery ES 300tdi has developed a life of its own, sometimes working, then nothing, then works for a short time when the auto box changes gear then nothing. Also my battery light sometimes faintly glows. Changed the battery a couple of days ago, but still doing it.

Any thoughts?

Battery light faintly glowing is usually your alternator on the way out. Cheap way to test it is to get one off a scrapped motor, put it in and see if the battery light is out.

I think take5 maybe on the right track there with the alternator as some vehicles take the rev counter signal from the alternator, check yer leads from it and yer plugs, pull gently on each wire they maybe broken inside. also check your earth leads may save the price of an alternator, good luck feller... :)

yer alternator is deffo knackered, i had the same thing on mine, swapped the alternator and bob's yer mothers brother ;)

Off to buy an alternator. Is there anything i need to be aware of, when fitting?
This shall be my first time, i shall of course disconnect battery.

Cheers.

make sure you DO reconnect the alt before starting yer injin otherwise you may blow the **** oot the diodes
