I have found the Michelin latitude cross 7.50 x 16 to be pretty good for general road/field if you're looking for another option. These are tubeless, so should be fitted to a tubeless rim.

I think that was current oe fit?

Just to update this, I've done a bit more reading around the internet and eventually found a few references that say that original rims are 5.5 inch, not 6.5. It seems the wolf rims are 6.5 inch.

LWB rims are wider than SWB with a different offset, or at least Series rims are.

Theres so many different types of series rims its unreal!
Just get some wolfs and chuck on whatever tyres you want job done.

Yes, as above wolf rims, or even recent LWB defender rims will take a large range of tyres, and keep an original look. It seems unlikely you'll be fitting a drum braked rear axle, which can limit your choice a bit.

so did 110 defender get wolf rims as standard? seems odd that 90 and 110 would have different sizes.

There's a bloke on ebay selling apparently genuine - out the back door at solihull - original 5.5J defender rims. Tubeless.

AFAIK, Ninety/One Ten and Defenders had the same 5.5j rims, although 6.5 wolf HD rims were offered as an option.
130s had Wolf 6.5 rims as standard.

Very good thread, Ive been wanting to post a similar one but was too scared to create a thread that would give responses like, "you want some that are round" or "some that are black"!!

I run 750's xzl's, on freestyle alloys (would prefer wolf rims, but lack of funds atm), and they really are very very good! My brother has bfg mud km2's in the 265/75 variant, and off road, especially on grass or old lanes, my skinnies have got farther, every, single time!
He still takes the **** out of me, but he's onit for the look more!
One other thing, the xzl's are quite 'thrummy' on roads, because of the tread blocks, I can accept this as a trade off for being excellent in every other way!! :)

I am enjoying this thread for sure. So thanks everyone.

Thinking about it... As long as I can get rangemasters to fit the 6.5j wheels, it might make more sense given my engine choice. My Saab has the same peak power as this v8, and I can't imagine wanting to put 5.5j wheels on that.

It's the balance between the original look and feel, and the updated engine that's tricky.

And thanks Gotts... That thrumming confirmed what I suspected with those tyres... Rangemasters still winning for me. Continuous centre tread for civilised road use, and decent shoulder knobbles for mud.

Just looking on camskill (and Google generally) and I realise I was making some assumptions that aren't true!

www.camskill.co.uk/m64b1003s2428p119772/Avon_Tyres_SUV_4x4_Avon_Range_Master_-_750_R16_C_112N_TL_Fuel_Eff_:_G_Wet_Grip:_B_NoiseClass:_3_Noise:_75dB

Is doesn't say on camskill, but on the Avon tyres site there is only one type of tyre ( tubed) and one size (750R16).

Given the above, it seems pointless trying to find tubeless rims!

Sigh...

Why oh why won't they make rangemasters in tubeless form, and in a modern size format?

Why? No problem with tubed tyres. Got three sets of wheels and tyres for mine, all tubed, not had a problem.

Do you know what... I think I've finally figured out what I was banging on about in the OP. When I thought I remembered having new range masters fitted to that old defender, I reckon they were actually alleged Goodrich AT tubed tyres, and bad those ridges on the inside. Anyway, I ended up taking then back several times with punctured tubes. I was told that all modern tyres had those ridges, and that the answer was heavy duty Dunlop inner tubes. These lasted till i sold the landy... But I wasn't convinced.

That put me right off tubed tyres!

So these lovely tubeless wheels off the end of the production line from Solihull would be no good... They're tubeless, which I gather means that they're not smooth enough or something like that.... More punctures!
