After 10 years the SIL has decided (again)to do the lands end to John o groats endurance event again.
So here we go...
Motor is a series 1 80” running all the original engine/gearbox etc. Runs well to 45mph & sits there all day.
So it’s not a normal run up the motorway it has regulatory tests,3 types of map/directions to follow.
Now this is done in December so makes things interesting for the motors.

SIL & my MRS are entering im just there to drop them off at the start line & collect at the finish.
so I have under 10 weeks to do the following.
to build some ramps to use onto a lorry.
Help with some classics spannering

Some good warm clothing required there me thinks, or you can get some nice usb powered heated stuff

Wow, impressed by the enthusiasm to drive series 1 from lands end to JOG in December :eek:

No idea about lorry ramps but you could knock a set out in a day with some angle iron and a welder.

yep plan to do this. They will only be used for S1 80” motors that’s all that will fit in the box.
It’s the other little jobs I now have to try to fit into my weekends.
oh & remembering it’s a positive earth :oops:
 
Good luck to them, LeJog is something I'd love to do but a combination of the cost & my age makes it something of a pipe dream :rolleyes:

30 or 40 years ago, I bought a couple of OLD Bartholomew's Road Atlas' - '5 miles to the inch' from a Charity stall somewhere in the east of England. I have no idea of the true age of either book but there are 'clues' in the older one. These include a handwritten 'I Spy' type game which was filled in throughout a full road tour from Lands end to John o Groats and then the return journey (never repeating an already travelled road) to Southampton. Before motorways! The exact route is marked on every page. Another game seems to be remembering film star's names, and then a hand written note of the populations in London, Glasgow and Birmingham. (London 4 million!) The other interesting game was to tick off on a long list of vehicle makes - Ford 3, Morris 9, Vaux 1, Aust 8, Fiat 0, MG 0, Jowet 1, Hillman 3, Hum 1, Riley 2, Tri, R.R., R.B., S.T., Cry, Jag, Bris. all 0, Stan.5 and Wol 1.
In amongst the games are 2 signatures which look like 'Degarg and Perraz with the code '4A' next to each signature. I am wondering if this was some form of organised rally-type journey.
Now that I have bored you silly, I will leave you to get on with your work, but I find them interesting!!

Or, could this be a 1950/60's evening of Table Top Rallying. Many motor clubs still have these evenings at their club house or local pub. They're good fun too.

I haven't a clue! It is a complete Road Atlas with the route traced carefully on each page.
The only other thing in in seems to be some route instructions which read -
"Outward via Derby, Etnall(?), Hilton, to Sudbury . Branch left to Wood Gate, continue half a mile branch left to Buxton.
Inward via A38 to Derby, A61 to Little Eaton.
The film star names are all from the era 30's(?), 40's. They are divided into 2 columns - male - 10 and female - 14.
Certainly looks as if someone has had fun passing away the time!
I have been trying to date the atlas from Mr g, and it seems to be from about the early to mid 40's.
 
A good place to ask would HERO and the editor office at Motorsport. Motorsport's archives are huge. Sadly, Bill Boddy passed away a good few years ago - Boddy's home was crammed with historical archives, motor sport data and every copy of Motorsport magazine. Philip Young of the original CRA in Oxfordshire, pre-cursor to the ERA, would have been a great source too...so maybe a call to the ERA?

So the day has arrived.
Drove down to the event today & unloaded in the local coach park.

Passed that so off for scrutineering.
Now they all swarm round

Only fault they found was spotlights need to be switched with hi beam not independently.
5 mins job to do, but as we are not permitted to work on the motors they do the work. All resolved and read for a mile check tommorow .

HP, the S1 looks in fine fine fettle. The issue with spot/fog/driving lights is a common one at scrutineering. A lot of teams fit a 'secret' in cct switch so the driving lights can be switched when not in high beam. This set up is very effective in foggy/low cloud conditions where it's not ideal to have reflective light bouncing back on very tired drivers eyes. Good luck to Mrs HP. Will be following daily on HERO website and youtube.

today is a meet & greet for the entrants,so I’m happy in the car park catching up with classic cars (& fixing up the lorry window that fell down this morning)

it’s a grim weather day & chuckling at the posh Bentley blowers with no roofs.
 
Well back to the hotel from tea. Little village has classic car invasion. All parked on double yellow lines round the square.
