Load-resistors are only required if you keep the existing relay (that is so the relay senses the same current being drawn), if you don't fit load-resistors then you need an LED relay but as you have discovered, some are 3-pin and other 4-pin. If you want to keep the LED replacement "bulbs" (which shouldn't be used on the road by the way) then you will need the 4-pin relay.
Using LED "bulbs" in the existing light unit could result in the vehicle failing the MOT (some get away with it and others don't, it all depends on how bright the LED's are and how thorough the MOT tester is). Purpose made replacement LED lights which are E-marked are fine which is why you see so many on Defenders (like mine), bit more difficult for Freelanders because as far as I am aware nobody makes replacement LED lights.
