Hi All,
I am a newbie to this site so thanks for the post... Got a strange one here, I have had LED indicators fitted to my 90 for a while without any issues. I have recently had the rear cross member replaced and I now seem to have a problem. Which ever direction you set the indicator stalk to all indicators come on. The direction you have selected seem to be brighter than the other side that shouldn't be on.
I have checked for trapped / damaged wires and all of the earths seem good. I have even changed the indicator stalk today in case it had worn out internally ( original from 1989) without any success.
If anyone has any ideas where I should look next that would be fantastic

Sounds similar to the problem I had, turned out to be an earth fault. It was a bad connection in the bulb holder on the wing, replaced the holder and the problem went. Are your repeaters on the wing bulbs or led's?
 
Can be an earth fault or the relay with LED indicators you need an adjustable relay. Could also be current leakage it doesn't take much to light up an LED I had similar issue when I fitted mines in the end I fitted Ballast Resistors to each corner which solved the problem. Have a search on the forum this issue has been covered many times. I've added a link for the Ballast resistors

Thanks for the help guys. I have just replaced the wing repeaters with LED units to try and solve the problem but it has made no difference
I will try the relay next in case it was damaged some how during the welding when the cross member was replaced.

Disconnect the side repeaters and try again, if it's still the same, disconnect the rear lights at the connectors in the rear tub. If this sorts the problem, it's likely a rear earth fault as mentioned above.

It's the wing repeaters that my LEd's where fine then i fitted wing repeaters and had issues. if you remove the indicator bulb in the dash this will cure the problem the reason being is the dash bulb is allowing the current to seep to the other indicator LED's to stop this with the dash bulb in place you need Ballast resistors fitted to indicators in each corner they simply crimp one wire onto indicator live and one to indicator negative wires.

Update - Removed the indicator bulb in the dash which solved the problem so thanks.

I think I will now put a sounder on each indicator circuit to remind me not to leave the indicators on now my bulb has gone

I have said it before.....why complicate a simple "analogue" vehicle by putting cheap modern "tech" on it.
When were you last rear ended in a Defender because somebody didn't see your standard rear lights/brake lights? What if the LED lights fail on your road trip in Morocco. Will you be able to fix it there?
 
If everything worked well prior to the crossmember replacement then it's 99.9% certain that the problem stems from there. Check again all your wiring and consider that when the wiring was removed for the repair work, it could have been wrong before but was in fact put back the correct way by the repair team / person. Also might be worth running a decent earth cable from the back end to the front, as I'm doing on mine. Not really worth spending money on stalk / bulbs / holders etc when your first post pretty much answered your own question.
