Just got my bus back from the stealer for (unrelated) repair and noticed oil on my front crossmember. Looking more closely I'd say it's coming from the gearbox. I've attached a pic of what I *think* is the bottom on my gearbox. Is that more leakage than normal?

The other question...

I was meaning to change the gearbox oil anyway (who knows when last it was done), but I can't make the diagram in the workshop manual line up with the bottom of my Landy. From what I can tell, the attached pictures show the drain plug and a filler plug, but for the life of me I can't see a filter. Anybody got a clue?

what year and engine you got in yours as the lt85 was more common in rangies than defenders 90 110 only stage 1 v8 used them, so use appropriate diagram for your box

I've got an 1987 v8. Not entirely sure it's a LT85, but that's my best guess. Any good ways to find out for sure?

Thanks for that Ashcroft link! Reverse is next to first gear, so it's either LT77 or LT85, depending on the color of the main casting: black is LT77 and aluminum is LT85.

Just crawled under the bus with a torch and the only black I see is oil :D so I think it's an LT85.

Now to figure out where that filter is... I'll have another look tomorrow.

Alrighty, I'm convinced that I've got an LT85 split-case/22C. Now...

Here's my guess: the 22C variant of the LT85 doesn't have an oil filter. Anybody tell me otherwise? Aside from not being able to find the blasted thing, I think the workshop manual backs me up.

I attached two pics, one from the workshop manual and one from the parts catalog. The first pic is the one I attached earlier, that shows the filter but not where it goes. I just noticed a note on that page that seems to say the filter is only for the 20C (solid case) variant. Anybody read that note differently?

The other interesting thing is the parts catalog. It has a diagram of the LT85 which I think is the 20C variant. That diagram clearly shows where the filter goes.

So, although both diagrams are clearly labeled LT85 they're clearly not the same gearbox. Am I nuts?
