Is you alternator still connected you never said.

If you can now connect the earth to the gearbox and then connect the battery but have nothing anywhere. Then you have fried something.

Do you have wiring diagrams and a DMM?

You will need to start at the basics and work through.

The sound of a donkey braying disturbed the peace of the neighborhood this morning as I discovered the end of the positive cable lying hidden behind the engine mount ! Being unfamiliar with the wiring to the starter I just assumed the only wires to go on were the ones I could see , which were one white push on , one brown and one black , all at the solenoid . Does the positive cable from the battery also go to the solenoid ? Don't want to blow up anything else at this point .

That positive supply would make your gearbox go live if it was in contact, other items may well have switched on as electrikety always wants to find a way home[ to the neg] along things like handbrake cable, reverse switch wire, diff lock light ect.
Why it is so important to have good earths.
The positive wire from the battery to the starter. The other wires there take the power to other services. Could not find a donkey so have to say you made a 🐓UP. Happens to us all once in a while.:D
