Not unique to land rover. All prop shafts need to have a sliding movement for the reasons described. I wouldn't describe fwh's as an inconvenience unless you spend huge amounts of time going on and off road. A series landy is effectively a two wheel drive vehicle with selectable four wheel drive. They are an optional extra to reduce drive train wear and tear.
 
I'd find fitting fwh's when I don't need them an inconvenience. I'd also find having to get out to adjust them whenever I needed to use them an inconvenience. Therefore, for my purpose, they are an inconvenience I can well do without.
