You'll probably need the engine hoist to get at all the bolts holding the bell-housing to gearbox. General approach is to remove as many as you can get to first, then lift engine, remove engine mounts and lower engine back down onto chassis rails so you can get at the remaining bolts.
Even so, it's worth making sure you can undo as many as possible tonight, along with the engine mountings, earth strap, alternator wiring, and so on (if you haven't already).
Also, have you done anything to the tdi head yet? You can give the valves a bit of grinding and replace the stem seals before it goes back on.
