If Rockingham is an off road centre then yes, I have done an off road day. I drove a jumped up Disco rather than a Freelander.
Let me tell you, you will LOVE it. I was grinning for days after.
You'll be surprised at what a 4x4 can do, terrain it can negotiate.

I convinced my dealer to pay for me to attend the experience centre near Honiton as they made a small error with the delivery of my Freelander. Having arrived in said vehicle, the experince centre, who had planned to use Td5 swapped immediately to a TD4 Auto. It was absolutely marvellous, if I'd not already owned one I'd have been and bought one. Enjoy.

Took a Disco 2 out at LR Experience's Coniston Hall (Yorkshire) a couple of years ago...
I've been off-roading (motor sport support) for a few years but would NEVER have dreamed have putting my Disco in some of the situations that I put theirs (on their suggestion).
It made me realise I didn't need a Disco so have bought a Freelander which is considerably cheaper to run and equally impressive offroad!
You'll have a lot of fun, with the bonus of watching stuck up LR3 drivers' faces when you follow them round the same course in a Hippo!

well, we arrived in our hippo, and took a td4 auto out on the road, which was a bit dull imho, and not what we were exactly expecting, but after an hour or so on the road we headed off road.

i really did not expect a hippo to be able to do what it did, we managed to do everything the disco 3's did, but in a flasher, wheel raising way, kept telling the disco drivers that it was them who were in the hairdressers cars, and they should try harder. in the end i managed to get up a slope that the instructor didn't think we would get up, and none on the discos even tried it. might even persuade the wife to get a few toys for the hippo, snorkel, under body protection etc
off to bures in a few weeks time on a testing mission with a mate who knows the owner well, so we are really looking forward to that.

There's a day out at Brick Kiln Farm in Alton Hampshire on the 3rd December.
Its in a forest and theres some bomb holes to negotiate.
Thinking of taking my Hippo

its being organised and advertised by Thames Valley 4x4 Club.
Toilets and Burger van on site.
Jet wash to clean wheels etc for road safety.
Directions are given as follows;
Follow A31 from Alton to Four Marks and Alresford. Follow the dual carriage way till you reach a roundabout at junction with the A32. Carry on down A31 and after a short while you will see a small gap turning right across the road towards a brick bridge. Make sure you are in the right hand lane to make this turn. Go through brick bridge and up the hill to the farm. Turn right and follow signs to main carpark. They will put out distance markers to help.

sorry but a freelander can't do half the things a defender can offroad (or a s3 for that matter i did the old billing off-road course in a camel freelander and it just about made it round, next i did it in a standard 110 csw (300tdi) and it wend round without breaking sweat where the freelander had to use hill desent the defender just went down in first with no throttle we only engaged diff lock for one hill (that the freelander failed on first attempt)

Its horses for courses and at the end of the day............................... its all down to tyre choice.
Low ratio in the Series, defender and disco only has the advantage in extreme circumstances. Usually only for towing or loaded with heavy loads.
I have done the 4x4 courses in 90's .........rutting, descents, stall - start etc
The FL is more like a racing motocross quads - fast powerful, other Landys are more like farm quads - slow with torque,

Much as I would lik to defend the Freelander here, I cant.
I accept that my Freelander went round the same Cannock Forrest tracks as the Discos and Series that were there but I have come out with bent sills, holes in the under tray (who would make a sump guard out of plastic)and tracking now out of alighnment. There were also a couple of hills I was advised were a little too extreme for a Freelander.
Bottom line, there just isnt enough ground clearance on a freelander.

Its all been said before..........people just dont know the limits of the freelander, its a soft roader, light and nimble.

It looks like you had the wrong choice of tyres for starters.
Ground clearance isnt as high as a defender, but even a defender can get caught out by the most brutal of tree stumps.
You should never drive over unknown heath or scrub without venturing by foot, there are heavy duty sump guards but these should have been fitted before off roading. the factory fitted fibreglass undertray is mickey mouse
On the down hill mud bath pic - sometimes non abs brakes will work better than abs ones, crud piles up in front of tyres allowing them to bed in and slow you down.
Its all down to traction, lose traction and you have lost control

what are you towing that you need low box? a 747? lo box is for your off-roading you try going through a 60ft mud run (ie the one at billing) in hi-box! you just wont have the torque, then try the same mud run in a gaylander you won't be aloud to try the marshals won't let you (they don't want to have to tow you off the site) mud is all about speed and ground clearance, oh and when was i v8 90 slow?
