Hi folks,

I have just bought an 1996 3.9 v8 disco and i couldn't be happier its in great condition for age and has only covered 56,000k but i really wanna tidy up a couple of areas that seem prone to rust plus i am looking to get it undersealed also so looking for some advice on that aswell.
I have noticed a few rust spots in places for example, the inside rear door checks just above wheel arches plus some corrosion on the aluminium panels on the rear of disco just next to mudflap brackets these problem's are not really major but i intend to keep disco for a good few years so don't want problem getting worse.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on treating or getting rid of problem?

Cheers!:D

Welcome me old china.

dont worry too much about the spots. if its rot, then get on top of the job..

keep yer eye on any unexplained watter useage.

Hi Mate,

I am getting a quote done from a coachworks company with regards to the bodywork issue and i have also booked disco in for a thoughrough steam clean underneath around the axles etc a scrub down and then it is getting undersealed with waxoyl etc.

Is there anything else you would recommend?

Thanks.

Hello

Check the condition of the window seals at the back including the top alpine windows these let water in and the sound deadening material under the carpet becomes a sponge which retains the water. If the seals are split and you don't want to spend untold replcing them buy a good quality sealent ( not that cheap and nasty clear slilcone crap) and using your fingers with or without gloves and smear it over the splits take your time and it works I did it last year and it is still dry

Hi Mate,

Thanks for the quick reply i have noticed the back side window (not the smaller roof one) is letting water in sometimes but not everytime it rains, also the back tailgate window seal is splitting slightly on the corners any idea where i could get new seals cheap or should i get some black silicone to seal them?

Evening

I used the black sealent but if you want new seals try one of the mail order companies such as paddock, or john craddocks you can find their adverts in the landy mags such as Landrover owner international or Landrover enthusiast you will be suprised how cheap good quality landy spares are. hope this helps

cheers

Evening mate,

Thanks for all your advice so far it seems that it is possible to restore disco back to top class condition.
I have just one other question for the time being anyway......! I have noticed that my dash has started to peel back from under the windscreen i heard there were a batch of landrover discoveries that had this problem, have you heard of this problem and if so do you have any useful tips on how i can refix it down again as it is pretty tough to put back down so not sure what glue etc would be able to hold it??

Thanks once again.

Chris Mack.

Fternoon

I have not had the dash board issue so I don't what adhesive would work best but I sometimes use EVO-STICK impact at work and it is very strong if you follow the instructions but I would see if there is past thread on the forum to see what works or not.

goodluck and enjoy your disco

cheers

Hi chris

I had the same problem with my dash. there is a trim kit available that neatly fits the edge of the dash and it is screwed in place . the only trouble is that because it is against the windscreen , trying to get a screwdriver against the windscreen is very awkward. Hence i did mine with the windscreen removed. It looks great when its done. I bought my trim kit off ebay, but it is probably available from Harwoods.
Hope this helps

Hi Chris. When i bought my 300tdi quite a few years ago the dash had the same problem and the previouse owner had used silicone but it didnt work. Anyway a few weeks after i bought it i called at landrover in bury for some part or other and mentiond to them about the dash and they arranged for a new dash and fitted it for me and even gave me a courtesy car for the day. I now have a 53 reg td5 landmark and love it but i also loved the 300 so i have kept it as a spare. The moral of the story is it may be worth a phone call.....Good Luck..PS my brother in law has recently bought a 300 tdi m reg that has had the same problem again pravious owner has tried to fix it with big black screws and washes but it is still lifted between the screws and looks an even bigger mess......Regards...Tony

Hi mate,

That kit sounds pretty good if it looks natural, what is it called if you can remember??
I have looked on ebay but all they seem to have is full dash kits of wooden dash kits, they dont seem to have any dash repair kits as far as i can see.

Cheers.
