Hi, i'm new to the forum and didn't know where best to post this.

I recently bought my first Land Rover Defender, 2nd hand but overall a good one. It's a 2003 TD5 G4 edition and has about 87,000 on the clock.

However, I joined this forum to seek advice on an issue I had a couple of weeks ago.

I was driving back from a very short trip (roughly about 10 miles round trip) when the engine made a clunking sound in 5th going up the hill to my house. It sounded almost as if the engine got a lot louder and the car started to loose speed. I changed to 4th and everything seemed fine, however when I got over the brow I changed back into 5th and the noise came back again, this time the revs shot up to full (as though the accelerator was stuck) and continued to do so when my foot was off the accelerator. I was at this point on a duel carriageway and managed to pull half on-half off a slip road to a petrol station and put the handbrake on. There were clouds of white smoke and the engine only stopped revving when I removed the keys.

I pushed it into the petrol station and started it up again in neutral. it ticked over fine but when I pressed the accelerator the clunking noise started again, there was lots of smoke and overall the engine sounded really rough. I then dipped the sump to find about 6 inches of liquid in there, suggesting that diesel had somehow made its way in there. I decided the car was undrivable and had it recovered by the AA who took it to my local Land Rover Specialist.

As far as I have read on the internet there are several possibilities that could have happened;

1) fuel pump failed- in which case its the fault of my Land Rover Specialist as he only just fitted a new one after claiming I needed to replace it.

2) Fuel injectors

3) turbo failed- although the fact it shut down when the keys were removed would suggest otherwise.

however, the information I am working on is sparse, I was wondering if anyone here could give me any advice on what it may be or a diagnosis before I let the engineer look at it.

thanks
james

another engine seems likely £1500 ish, could be 2 problems injectors and turbo, removing hose from turbo to intercooler will prove turbo issue or not

If you bought from a dealer http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/buying-crock-****-if-you-already-have-76002.html may help.

unfortunately it wasn't a dealer based sale...

It's been relatively troubleless up to this point, my main worry is that it could be the fault of the mechanic and that he'll try and get me for something else. It just seems a little bit TOO coincidental that I have a new fuel pump and tank fitted and only after about 15 miles after it has been fitted does something go wrong which shows the symptoms of fuel pump failure

The other week i had a similar problem with my revs staying on when I'd took my foot off the accelerator. It turned out to be a kinked accelerator cable. New one fitted and problem solved.

Yes and no - it isn't often (I doubt) you rev the nuts of yours for a sustained period of time while looking in the mirror to see how much crap comes out the back.

That said, I doubt it was your problem, but worth a check..?

Tom

EDIT: forgot about crap in the sump!
