Evening ,i apologise in advance if im asking stupid questions !!ive just purchased my first land rover 90 always fancied one but if im honest i know nothing about them ,on the journey home i noticed a near enough constant black smoke which increases when accelerating ,now apparently its had quite a few bits done to it ,i can see its had a new turbo but in my opinion it aint doing nothing there is a pipe that is located on the bottom of the turbo and it meets another pipe with a bit of rubber hose between it but it dont line up and the rubber hose that links the 2 pipes is kinked now i have no idea what that pipe does and would this be causing it to smoke and under powered any ideas ???ahttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271153818771?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648int doing nothing bit puzzled really i ideas

For starts its NOT a 200tdi it's a 19J and yes they are slow and turbo does well not a lot.

And regarding pipes not 100% sure what your on about but can't you unkink the pipe?

Could be 200 as it mentions intercooler

Kink in pipe would allow overfueling so could cause black smoke

Hello btw

Definitely a 200tdi engine but probably out of a Disco. Doubt its only done 45,000 miles though if the odometer is original to the vehicle.

Just noticed the add says 45,000 miles but the photo of the odometer shows 170,000 miles!
You've got turbo problems big style mate

Black smoke generally means unburnt fuel, could either be a turbo boost leak (do the turbo pipes get hard when you rev the engine?), fuel pumps turned up to high or the turbo is doing nowt. Check all hoses for condition, replace if unsure, sometimes they will delaminate so pop them off to inspect. You can check condition of turbo by feeling the spindle, it should have no play in it if its a new turbo. Winding back the fuel pump may also help, its common people turn them right up expecting some miracle power boost, defenders are not fast vehicles even turned right up, mine has a brand new turbo, decat, up'd boost e.t.c. and it still doesn't feel fast, plenty of low grunt but fudge all on the open road...

If you are still unsure take it to a local LR place and see what they have to say (or ask nicely on here and someone may take a look)

BTW its definitely a 200tdi and its a disco engine not defender...

i had the same problem on my 90 the spindle inside the turbo was loose sounds like a turbo problem to me good luck

thanks for the replies ,to be fair the turbo looks brand new but fitted dodgy, ill check what you guys have mentioned tomorrow and see if i cant un kink that pipe,i know they aint quick but its takes the **** ,im happy with tho not a bad price i thought 6mths mot 9 mths tax

Thanks for the replies ,ill check what you guys have mentioned tomorrow and see if i cant un kink that pipe ,i know they aint quick but its laughable ,im happy with it for the price 6mths mot 9mths tax and there is a invoice back in 2008 for a 200tdi disco engine at a whoping £1400 lol

The pipe in question is the oil return pipe from the turbo ,but its in 2 pieces with a bit of rubber pipe to join them and that is kinked up because the pipes dont line up so its totally stopped the oil if that makes sense looks a right bodge job.what impact would this have ??

That will cause the turbo to chuck the oil into engine and run its self (run away)
Get it sorted!!
Don't drive it

cheers sible i aint used it since i drove it back ill get on it ,the more i look at the truck the more i think wtf have i done are they all abit like that?

Most but not all!!
A lot of people buy 90's and add bits to them very cheaply and only do half a job.
Always best to take some1 who knows there stuff before parting with your cash

Hi ,right ive unkinked the pipe for the oil return ,but i drove it for the second time today and theres no power the turbo aint doing anything.
i revved it from the engine bay and i noticed the actuator rod wasnt moving at all ,ive checked all the hoses ive checked the turbo for play and there is no play what so ever
what else should i be checking for ?
thanks in advance

No i aint done that will give it a go but shaft does spin freely ,i read somewhere that it could be something to do with the diaphram in the diesel pump ??where the pipe goes to the turbo to control boost is that a possability or am i barkin up the wrong tree?

there is a pipe that goes from turbo to top of injection pump to increase fueling to go with increased air ,but turo needs to create pressure
