Is it worth having oil and filter (if it has one) changed on my gearbox, and diffs? Whats the norm for you guys to do? As do you do it yourself or is it a trip to the main dealer

Any advice greatly recieved

I had the ATF and filter changed on mine as soon as I got it, at my local independent it cost me £150 ish, worth it for peace of mind, as they are a weak point. Mine had never been done and is a lot better now. Was good before but this, made it silky smooth on changes .

Cheers guys

Spoke to 2 independants, both quoting £200 ish.

One said they use Dextron 3 oil instead of full synthetic, as fully synthetic would cost about £200 for the oil alone, is this right? He said a lot have gearbox problems anyway and putting the fully synth in it possibly wont make it any better anyway

Does this sound right??

Also, what sort of price is 10 litres (I think it takes 10 litres right?) of Texamatic 7045e? Fouind 20 litres online delivered for £80ish

According to GM who own the rights to the Dexron formula, some versions of Dexron III are fully synthetic? I know nowt about the GM box but you will not be able to get all the oil out if it's like the ZF, about half the total will be trapped in the torque converter so say 5 litres for an oil change if the total is 10 litres. Even a stealer prices the oil should not cost you more than £80.

According to Texaco's data sheet on Texmatic 7045e, it is equivalent to Dexron IIIG

Been googling gearbox oil change and some of our friends across the pond wrote you should drian and fill up, run it, drain again and fill up, sort of diluting it down til it all be changed, surely thats a bit excessive?

Also read about removing the sump to change the filter, would this be the process on my TD6 2003 L322?

Sorry, as I said no idea about the GM box, look in RAVE that will give you all the details.

thats the way to do the old ZF as data sed, id suspect the newer box isnt much more different.Although i heard yanks garages pump the the new atf through and effectively flush the system cos auto are more common there.Dunno how this would help ya.

the gm gearbox is weak at the best of times so dont be tempted to put dexron 3 in, use the texamatic which is specially formulated for the gm box. the filter needs changing when you do it which is a nice easy job, just put the suspension in the off road setting gives you plenty of room underneith. the awkward bit is getting the oil back in the box because the prop shaft goes right across where the filler plug is, normally they take six litres to fill after draining and a filter change. it is a good idea to change it then run it for a month or so then do the same again to try and flush the rest of the crap out, remember to run it through all the gears and leave it running to check the level. when it dribbles out the fill plug its got enough in. i change mine once a year to try and keep the box reliable.

Cheers AaronBeast, will look into it this week and try and order some oil and a filter, is there anytihng else I should get while I'm at it?

Also, are they 22" Vogue rims on your RR in your avatar?

they are 22" rims but i cant remember where i got them now, there are very similar ones advertised on ebay with tyres for around 1500 quid. they have been moved to the td6 now as i sold old faithfull in the avatar.

not got any pics of them on your TD6 have you mate? I been watching the sets on ebay for ages but still cant decide, worried aftermarket styles wont suit the L322

i just tryied uploading some pics, hopefully it worked.

Cheers Aaron, they do look great!

You're either a very rich man with a 2011 Rangey, or your 54 plate has undergone a facelift... was it much hassle?

a 2011 would be nice but im not that rich unfortunatly, i did the face lift in october last year. its not that much hassle to be honest just time consuming making it look factory, im a fussy git when it comes to the car . i got plenty of pics from doing it if you want to see them, might help if your going to do it to yours. the worst part of the conversion id paying out for the parts, bloody expensive but worth the finished look.
