the following happened to me last night we drove out to visit some friends and when we were going home the car started and then died immidiately,i locked and opened the car and then started it again same result.
i think the ignition is stopped because when we restart without locking and opening it does not fire up and there is a slight smell of gasoline.

anyone has an idea what is going on?

here's an update concerning our Freelander.
checked working order of keys and alarm handset (works fine)
checked possible fuses(are ok)
the vehicle is an'99 1.8 16Valve
the result is still the same starts, fires up and then dies.
if I try the spare set which is dead nothing goes so in my opinion the immobiliser works but something causes the engine to turn off.

anyone has an idea

There was an identical thread to this within the last couple of weeks where an early 1.8 would cut out a second or 2 after firing.

Not sure what the outcome was, but if you look back through the Freelander threads, you'll find it.

Actually, got mixed up there. It was an F2 cutting out and another thread wanting to know about the imobiliser of an early K Series.

Had a Mk1 1.8 early 2000 myself. Used to do same thing.

What I ended up changing was fuel filter in tank, rota arm and distribution cap. Now I'm not saying either of these caused it but I changed all three at once and it solved it.

When it was cranking and not starting you got a lot of petrol smell from exhaust, and if you dropped easy start into it it would run and then stop when stop spraying as if fuel wasn't getting to it.

ok thanks will check them first then although my FL starts and then dies immidiately.

You need to check the fuel delivery volume by allowing it to discharge into a measured receptacle. The pump should pump a couple of litres in a minute.

can hear the pump prime but after starting there are no sounds from the back
so it primes and then stops?? after starting the engine makes a few revs and then stops.
the question in this case is is the pump connected with the immobiliser?
because my second immo. is broke and with this the starter does not even turn

had pump out end tested it out of car runs fine, checked filter no obstruction there
next step will be ignition and keep my fingers crossed that it works afterwards

said yo keep you all upgraded distributor cap and rotor exchanged NO result.
ordered a fuelpump got the wrong part (differeent connector).
new pump will be in house wednesday will keep you posted

new pump installed still the sam problem omly a less noisy pump.
ouy of cleus, think will have to take the steering column apart to look at the contact switch
keep you all posted

had the switch out and checked looks fine to me.
now got the negative lead disconnected from battery hope it resets
after this I'am out of ideas.
anyone got some tips???
