CHRIST!! So yes it appears the K&N is just a very expensive hole :D
I have read extensively about filtration and read David Vizards graphs etc.
K & N had the best flow rate but then every thing he does is aimed at getting the bst for race and track as well as the street. And it was in the days when a bit of oil going into the air intake wouldn't matter as MAFs were rare as feck!
So now all i do is change the paper filter regularly, and their flow rate is great too. Just avoid the foam type ones, they get heaped with cr@p in nothing flat. Sad to say. They are the only sort i can get to fit under the bonnet of my twin carb B series engined Marlin Roadster and after admittedly quite a few miles, even with changing them regularly, my engine now needs a bit of a rebore!

DV wasn't too interested in filtering the fine dust out the air (maybe sponsored by K&N?), only getting air in fast, without large lumps of dirt being present.

ran triple K&N's with stub stacks fitted. These flowed really well, however filtration was always compromised, which the owner knew and accepted. When carbs were being serviced, it was obvious just how much dirt got through the filter, as the Strommie CD carb pistons were always covered in a thin layer of gritty dirt, some of which must have made its way to the cylinders.
So yes lots of air passes through the K&N, but so does lots of fine dirt particles.

Paper is still the best filter medium to use.

Stop with the porn pics already :D
All this talk lf carbs is making me WAY too nostalgic!
I had never thought of exchaust changes for perfomance on a diesel to be honest, don't know why really.
Just out of curiosity, what are we talking in terms of performance increase, in what order would you guys guess at the biggest 'difference-maker'?
Remap, Exhaust, EGR, DPF (if that helps at all), exhaust...?

Oh and I am sure I read somewhere on the board that you can "wind up" the turbo a bit on TD5s, I might have a go at that.
One thing I notice with my friend's TD5 is that it still has the lacklustre pickup below 2k revs, but then it GOES. Mine does similar, but it just goes, rather than GOES :D (no kick up the ar5e, like his)

PS - In case any mods read this, the notifications are definitely unreliable. I got one yesterday for this entire thread, my settings should send me email alert for every post.

Had a message from my friend, here's what that TD5 owner says he had done on it:

"Stage 3 remap
Decat pipe
Bigger intercooler
Induction kit "

I dont really understand what stage 3 means, pretty sure mine was a "stage 2" from Dynachip

Sounds to me like you would be happier owning a performance car. You remind me of a mate I used to knock about with, he had a gorgeous wife but was always moaning about her cooking.

He he he. Your mate had a "gorgeous wife", did he now?! I can't imagine for the life of me why you no longer knock about with him, do you still knock about with her I wonder? :D

If I would be happier owning a performance car, guess what pal? I'd own a fukkin performance car. Get your lonesome little contrarian kicks somewhere else, Mr Glass-Half-Full-All-Of-A-Sudden. Maybe find some wings to pull off a bug in your attic.

Some more pearls of wisdom from the ever-positive Col:

"I'd have to really cheer up to be described as cantankerous. Col" (Self knowledge is so empowering isn't it)

"Sounds to me like you're overthinking it. Col"

Sounds to me like the way things "sound to you" is more a function of your outlook than a true reflection of reality. But hey, opinions are like ar5e holes, we've all got one haven't we? (Of course some are a little dirtier than others).

And those filters are similar to the ones I had to use as described in the rest of my post.
But your mate appeared to have more space than I had. And these seem to not be just tjhe simple foam ones. also the top of the carb, i.e. the "lid" seems to be a bit father away from the mouth of the carb, which is also important to get freer flow into the intake. too many after market filter holders are too flat, and they often cannot take ram pipe/stubbies etc.

Edit. Sh!t! just realised there were words under the pic. so what i have just written may be off the point, I'll read them now and see!

Can't help but agree with this. Well the bit about the car!
If you want to go fast then get a vehicle that goes really fast. But yes you can tune a TD5 and a 300tdi for that matter, to make it more driveable., especially for towing. why the surprise that a diesel can be tuned? didn't one do very well a year of three ago, at Le Mans?

Oooh, touchy. I don't expect we will be seeing you here for long. Try looking up sense of humour and irony in a dictionary.

hehehe, why do you think I am touchy? did you take my post to heart, ooh don't be touchy. Try looking up sense of humour in a dictionary.
I looked up "joke" instead, and all it had was your picture.
Maybe you should look up "tactical retreat". ;)

Shoulda got a jumbo tub!
Make it a wheel barrow, salted of course :D

If you want to go fast then get a vehicle that goes really fast.
Exactly, couldn't agree more.
Tiny detail I know, but I don't want, and didn't say I wanted a vehicle that goes really fast, did I? But what if I want a TD5 that goes faster than mine? Is that ok? Apparently not according to Colonel Misery. Or "should" I still just shut up, feck off, and buy a fast car because wanting my TD5 to perform a BIT better 'must' mean I 'really' want a Lotus Carlton! Great for shooting bunnies and towing my boat them things. :D

I can't remember the phrase for it, but this is basically one of those conversations that became an argument where one didn't exist, purely and solely due to the obnoxious nature of one of the involved parties, one in this case who actually wasn't involved in what was an interesting discussion beforehand, and only became involved for that solitary purpose, to do as those 'types' always do: take a contrarian argumentative posture to appear all cool and different, the fish swimming up stream even if it doesn't lead the right way, just to be 'different'. It's quite sad really, but I must find out what the word is for these types. It isn't the four letter C one which comes to mind, I double-checked. :D

Can't help but agree with this. Well the bit about the car!

I get the 'group think' thing Stan, I really do, but let's take stock shall we:

I have a TD5 Disco. I love my TD5 Disco. It's a VERY sluggish one, that's by comparison to other TD5 Discos, not by comparison to a Bugatti. I dont want a race car, I want a TD5 Disco, that's why I drive one. Am i weird for liking the idea of it being quicker considering it barely gets up the hills where I live without TWO gear changes? If so, this forum has a lot of weirdos on it.

I had a remap to try to improve it. If everyone on LZ who had a remap or ASKED about how to improve their TD5 performance took this advice and drove a sports car instead, this forum would barely exist. I saw a very pokey TD5 and merely asked about the upgrades/changes made, to SEE if I wanted to do any. In fact even that's not quite true, my original post actually says "Just considering the K&N" - that was the original reason for posting. I was "just" wondering about upgrading the air filter, and glad I asked as that was a bad idea, thanks to the interesting posts about marketing hype of K&N and bad filtration.

I would never replace a perfectly functioning exhaust. I would never cut my airbox. I would never fit a bigger intercooler, because mine has AC for starters. I was curious. It's a "discussion" forum, I was "discussing". Shocking, I know, I am just kinda whacky like that. :)

I am actually more focussed on improving mpg right now which usually comes with a performance increase anyway, but that topic can also smoke out all the usual yawn-worthy cantankerous contrarian antagonistic lonely fools who often use forums as catharsis to make up for their lack of real-world civilised human interaction (lets just call them Col for short, Cantankerous Obnoxious Lumps shall we say :D - and I made a smiley face just so nobody thinks this isn't ironic humour amongst bum-chums) who make equally moronic statements like "sounds to me like you need a Tesla if you don't want to use any fuel" or some similar ejection of stagnant warm air which had no relevance or place in the prior conversation. But it sure makes em feel good doesn't it!

Do I want a TD5? Yes, funnily enough I do, and that's bloody lucky, cos I just looked out the window and turns out I have one on my drive!! Bonza dude!!
Would I like my TD5 to save me a few quid on long runs with slightly better fuel efficiency? Yes.
Would I like my TD5 to have more poke to pull and get up hills, and maybe even accelerate better if possible? Yes, that would be pretty neat!

Do those two answers mean I shoud have another vehicle? No.
Do they give a chance for a sorry excuse for a troll to needle an argument out of someone where one doesn't exist, having run out of ants to burn with their magnifying glass? Yes. Twas ever thus, forums are forums, people are people. Too long in the tooth to be surprised, but far from too long in the tooth to return that parcel of 5hit to sender when necessary. Plus I get to prop up the popcorn business which, in the impending economic collapse, is just my bit to help my fellow man.

And Col: "I don't expect we will be seeing you here for long" - Is 4.5 years not what you consider 'long'? ;) You and that outlook of yours, eh, you should get help with that! Besides, I always aim to exceed expectations. Think positive bud. And remember, this is all in jest isn't it, or was it "ironic" you were going for? You clearly don't understand what that means so keep that dictionary of yours handy won't you petal. Here, just for you. Don't dish out what you can't swallow.

Hehehehe, aren't we havin fun here!
I love a bit of banter me! :p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p, ooh I'd tickle ya if I could ya ironic lil rascal!!

Yours in humour, irony, peace and love my friend :)

I thought you seemed touchy cos you threw your rattle out of you pram. By the way, try mumsnet for tuning tips for the pram. You've got the makings of a humorous poster but keep practicing.

Keep it up Jennifer. Give it a few more pages and you might even learn to spell. What happened to us just having some ironic humour? Oh yeah, I remember, you were full of 5hit as everyone knows. hahahahahahaha. Well at least one of us is having fun, tell me, if I bring my pram to Brum, will you make sure the wheels stay on it when I pop into Mothercare? :D :D :D :D - Nowt as much fun as a good bit of craic, eh Colonel!

:p

so go for it, you'll find plenty of sensible advice on here. After all i have tuned all of my cars, including the TD%, though I have had to be extremely careful with it as I have to have standard SAGA insurance to get the longterm cover over in France.
Best of luck.

And no i am not taking sides, i'm too full of popcorn!

You're spot on. I tend to argue the words, not the man, whenever possible. But hey what do I know, I can't even tune my pram :D
Go get some proper stuff done! This fills my time during other work and I love building relationships with fun types like Col. cheers!
