K&N Air filter for TD5 engines... are these worth the money and do they give any significant gain?

OK - you never have to replace it, simply clean it out... but is this ball ache plus the extra cost upfront worth it or just buy halfords own ones and chuck em away every year...

What's the concensus?

Although you do get a bit more power out they are the apparently the best way to foooook an engine up, especialy in a dusty off road enviroment.Think about it, the only way to get more air quickly into an engine is gunna let other stuff in:eek:
 
I have seen a cyclone type device that you insert somewhere into the air intake, this is supposed to swirl the air to give more power - no idea if it works though.
 
wot it is supposed to do is increase the vortexes in the air flow, thereby increasing fuel atomisation and the mixing of the fuel/air mix. this should increase the burn rate, producing more power. i aint totally convinced tho.

You'll have to watch it or I'll get my anti-K&N soapbox out :( I very nearly stuffed up my 300tdi completely running one of those. In South Africa, even without going into the bush, your engine life will be reduced to about 60 000 miles or less if you fit one. Of course you have less dust in the UK.

K&N cleaning instructions:
1) remove filter from what is left of your engine
2) wash filter in petrol, being careful to keep it off your hands
3) place on driveway or concrete path
4) light with match
5) go and buy decent paper filter

I notice the K&N has a 'million-mile' warranty. That is for the filter, not for your engine :eek:
 
I think I would prefer and engine to last way into the 100k -200k + range than have its pistons wobling about in scratched eroding bores for sake of a 5HP gain...

Errmm..... Maybe I'll take mine out then!
In my defence I bought the car with it already fitted.
 
Mike, if you are to stay in the UK the K&N may be ok. Just don't go anywhere that has a dusty environment. It also depends on how long you want to keep the vehicle. Maybe sell it on Ebay - they aren't cheap!
 
I have a mate that does rally cross out here with a K & N air filter!
He dunt give a **** though cos he changes his engine every year.
 
a put one o they halfrids cheepy filters on ma civic there was no power gain but i kept it coz even on the standard egghost system you get a good harty rumble that ****es off the "jonses" next door when a go to wurk at 5:30 in the mornin
