Second post haha... sorry for such a bottom level post.

I've got a series 3 with the 2.25d - I want to jump start it (not sure why it drained) and I've got leads and a 1.9d berlingo.... I'm worried about all the negative earth warnings on the landy... is this what a berlingo is - can I just jump it like a normal vehicle?

I jump my diesel with a clarkes jump starter (car battery in a box essentially) so can't see that you would have a problem

most cars are negative earth, your berlingo should be

2 1/4 diesels are a s*** to start at the best of times, make sure you give the glowplugs plenty of heat before you turn it over

the warning are due to a period when they had pos earths, so they wanted to make sure everyone knows. be rare for a pos earth nowadays

you beat me to it trax all the real old cars used to be a positive earth so a reverse of what they are now but due to static and earthing problems they switched to negative earth and the first few years they had to label that the car was a negative earth to anyone working on the system knew the body was earth not positive and to wire accordingly. so a berlingo is negative earth just the same as your landy.

easy way to check is follow the negative wire from the battery if it goes to the body or chassis then the vehicle is negative earth :D

Personally give a good 15-20 seconds on the glow plugs before turning over, and as others said, red to red black to black

"2.25 diesels are a ***t to start ???? In that case there is something wrong with it. Even in coldest winter 25/30 seconds of heat and mine fires up without problem.

mine starts fine every time too, mind you when it is really cold you don't want to be walking past the exhaust when it fires up, it does take a few more turns to fire and anyone there gets a good gassing :bounce:

Don't just stick the jump leads across and try to start it, give it 10mns. on fast tick over to put some power into the landy battery.

Red to red, black to black and blue to f*ck !!

I'm not the first to complain of this, won't be the last. Unless I give both of mine a minute of heat, no joy.

I do have the original 1959 petrol on the way though :)

smoke is my problem it is pretty smokey when running, once had a 110 na that put out black smoke most of the time, used to pass its emissions though which always puzzled me
