Jemima is potentially counting down her last days as being part of the Lang family.
Just failed her MOT but all she needs is welding but I need to ask your advice - how big a job is this?
Neither me nor hubby weld - he won't let me learn as he says I'd spend too much time being too neat and picky - which I don't think is a problem!
Refusal notice states the following:

seatbelt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded

this applies to nearsides and offsides and front and back

Am I just better off letting her go?

doesnt sound like much...

if you can, take some pictures of the areas and post here

Before you make a decision get a couple of quotes from good independents who don`t see welding as the opportunity cost for knocking out easier stuff. I`m sure people will be able to recommend somewhere if you give your rough location.
Excessive corrosion of seatbelt mounts is just the soundbite for the refusal - it could be a lot of welding or not very much, essentially depending on how far you need to get to find good metal to which to weld.
Don`t do anything hasty till you`ve costed it and looked at the alternatives.
And remeber before you commit to ask what advisories there m ight be for next year, if its likely a load more welding next year thats a different ballgame

Photos are now in my album on my profile. I am in the Moray area of NE Scotland, so any recommendations would be great!

That does look like a fair bit of welding to be fair, but not beyond what most amateurs are capable of.

Its a shame you are so far away. I got 3 weeks off after this week and all the equipment here

well, its not too bad...

basically its sills and arches, common on the discos.
I've repaired both on my ex-disco.... easy to do, if you have the time and the knowledge to weld and fabricate metal

Looked at the photos, difficult to be tell just off photos but looks as if it is not a massive job, just time consuming, but not the one to teach yourself welding on either.
I would ask around locally for recommendations for a good welder , mobile or maybe the traditional backstreet garage kind of guy. He or she doesn`t really have to be a Disco specialist or even a LR specialist, just a good general welder, but if you have a good LandRover independent near you get a quote off them as well.
Once you stop limiting your search to a garage that does good welding and look for a good welder instead life might get easier - where you are I would imagine there are some welding maestros in the boat repair business for example, or there`s always lorry/tractor/plant repairers
But get a firm quote before you have any work done

i would say its pretty far gone ,anything is rebuildable but at what cost are you prepared to pay ,it not be patching thats needed as its well rotten under underseal, ishould imagine the rest underneath is prety poor to ,footwells ,rear cross member, boot floor ,as well as inner and outer sills ,wheel arches etc,i would seriously look at another car ,got to be £800 if you break it more if your lucky

you are right there jamesmartin, but if the MOT only found that, I assume the rest is alright?

thanks for all the advice - well varied info!!

The MOT failed because of one of the side repeaters not working (just needs a bulb) and the offsides and nearsides, front and rear 'seat belt anchorage prescribed area excessively corroded'

Engine and everything else fabby, starts every time, we've had no problems and mechanically shes great. Boot floor been done '08.

We have found a good few quotes all over £1000, one welder even advising that he doesn't want the job as a previous job he did on a land rover he said once he started he kept finding other bits and the job never really ended lol The one thing they all said though, is that the job is do-able but its purely time consuming. Seeing as me and the Mr work a distance away from home and we have 2 kids, we need to have 2 vehicles going - so reluctantly we have listed Jemima on ebay last night :frown:
And will buy another :)

Anyone interested?!

i agree to an extent but thats not always the case. the 300TDI which im repairing at the minute, both sills, floor on both sides, rear arches are rotten but the boot floor, innerwings, rear crossmember, seat belt anchorages are all solid which i found strange but its true.the sills on jemima look better than the sills i chopped off mine but thats not too say other areas are not worse.Id definatly say its repairable though as this project im doing was a major learning curve for me :D
