Just wondering if anyone's got any updates after using aft-u? Is gear selection up and down perfectly smooth and nearly unnoticeable?

Yes
Mine is using ATF-U at the moment. It's smooth as it should be once hot with no funny noises. ATF-U is a bit thicker when cold so the changes are a little more noticeable when cold but it will offer better high temperature protection so it's better when it matters
After all the research I did I found the LR 402 stuff is basically Dexron 2 with additives so ATF-U far exceeds it's spec. I'd not hesitate to use it in the Jatco box.

covered 2000+miles since my last change using atf-u hippo and all is good. gear changes are still a bit rough when cold but only for the first couple of minutes

Thanks all. Resistances are ok. Not sure how long it's been since I did a flush but it's due now. Tested it today and when braking it slightly misses on the down change. As if the rev's are too low or high for smooth take up of the next gear. My recon auto has done about 22k + whatever the original Freelander did before it broke'd. Oil darkens a little so I flush it once a year. I assume the values are sticking a bit if the oil is dirty. Can't remember when I last did it so it'll go on the list. Just realised today I've been driving it just over 8 years. All mot's passed first time. Loads spent.
 
so what's the conclusion? Carlube ATF-U or Texamatic 7045E ?

it sounds like Texamatic 7045E is closer to OEM and so will drive better from cold; have I understood correctly?
 
Just recently bumped into guy who I sold one of my freelanders to ,and its still going well and no probs with box and its still on ATF-U HTSH
