Anyone got an opinion on this....

Driving along a back road the other night, surface a bit rough, when I got up to about 55-60mph I got some quite nasty kicks back from the steering wheel. I could clearly feel the wheel kicking from left to right quite quickly. Definitely felt as if the front wheels were vibrating from side to side, as if they were bouncing around.

Now, in days gone by I had a beamer 740 which did this, and I only eliminated it after replacing shocks, rod end bushes, hub bearings and discs. I'd rather not bankrupt myself doing that again, so I'm thinking in the following order:

1. Steering damper
2. Front shocks
3. Track rods

Tyres are good and pressure is right. No bearing play at all that I can feel, front end doesn't bounce when stationary.

Is it a Classic? I had a similar problem on my Classic and finally solved it by doing the swivel pin preloads.

I'd go with Mik on this one. Check the preload first, then go for the other parts if necessary.

The next to check are the panhard rod bushes and fixings and the steering damper. On RRC:s (and Discos) the panhard rod bolt eats the mounting around it quite easily. On the axel mounting I mean. If you change the bushes, change the bolts and nuts, and check the mounting for wear. If it is worn, weld suitable spacers (?, if this is the correct word, I'm not a native English speaker) on the axel mounting of p-rod so that the bolt fits to the holes well.

If this does not help, then the other steering related parts - track rod ends and so on.

If your car is a Classic, the parts you need are quite cheap. Should you need any.
 
Hmmm. Never thought of that one. Correct size tyres, although they are lower profile Pirelli's which I will change once they're worn out.

Going to manual to see what's involved in adjusting this. Unless you can advise, of course.
