Hi all, i have a much loved and depended upon 1991 90 truck cab 200tdi, it has low miles, 68,000, just gone through the mot with advisory about the raikos, anyone know how much of a job they are to rebuild and can they go on for many miles with some slack there? It currently does 350 miles a week with no apparent wandering or nasty characteristics!

Was it a landy specialist wot sed about the Railkos', an was it cos of play in the swivel or the force, or lack of it needed to pull the wheel round. It could be that they just need re shimming.

Thanks for the quick reply GRUNT, not a land rover specailist, he just jacked up the front and showed me the slack whilst gripping top and bottom of the wheel, also the near side swivel is leaking oil, needs topping up every so often, cheers.

Sure it int yer wheel bearings. It int a difficult job to do the bushes you might as well do the taper roller bearings an seals at the same time.

Well he did mention doing all of it while he was there, i wonder how you can tell if it,s the wheel bearings and not the raikos? About £180 a side was mentioned, rough estimate, finishing up with one shot grease.

If it's yer wheel bearings yool be able to wobble yer wheel by holding it at the 9 and 3 o'clock postition, if it's yer railko then pushing an pulling the top of the wheel is where you'd feel most play.

Also if it just needs re shimming then with your track rod and steering arm disconnected, an a spring balance hooked onto the track rod end hole you can tell by the amount of load needed to pull the hub round whether the pre load is correct.

One shot will stop the oil leaking out but won't stop water getting in, it's ok fer a quick fix solution till the weathers better fer working outside.

All very useful and much appreciated info GRUNT, thanks for that, will give it some thought whilst eating me jalfrezi now, cheers mate.
