Took it for test today and unfortunately it failed............. on the brake light in the trailer socket and the heater fan not working. Free retest but what a pain in the arse.

I can perhaps understand the blower then. But brake light in tow socket? Never heard of that before. Or ever seen it tested.
Sounds like a bit of a jobsworth to me:(

Still easy fixes I hope, still a pita.

Just checked and there is no mention of the heater under electrical equipment to be checked during an MOT... if it down to the de-misting then it should fail on the basis it a Defender!!
I questioned the heater fan and he told me its part of the test. When i was on the way back at 60mph, the hot air was blasting out and a fan would have made no difference. On the case of the trailer socket, i think if its on the vehicle, it has to work.

Well blow me over
Apparently if fitted the tow bar electric socket is checked at MOT.
I just checked.
School day every day:)

Having looked/ searched about... the heating (even as de-mister) is not part of the MOT and that's been stated by MOT testers, so that one still seems a little strange to me. I get the second point as if its fitted and at some point might be used it becomes part of the lights.

Over here the commercial test is called a CVRT. I would presume as we are all still part of the EU, that the test is the same. If it fails on a particular item, does that item print up automatically on the fail sheet for the examiner to highlight or has the examiner typed it what it failed on in his own words.( his opinion)?

I think you've taken it to the wrong MOT tester
My friendly chap passed me first time and he didn't even look at the tow bar socket, or try the blowers, or mention the straight through exhaust with no Cat or silencer.
I did take the 50mm wheel spacers off and fix the number plate light, before taking it to him though :D

I'm glad I am not over there anymore, that's harsh! My MOT tester definitely didn't check my towbar socket because none of the cables were connected, he actually handed me a spanner to tighten a nut I forgot to tighten and handed be back my own ring spanner that I had left on the brake caliper bleed nipple
