i *think* if you look at the DVLA definition of the '4x4 utility' it basically means a 4x4 with interchangeable bodies. I cant emember exactly but i ahd the same thing when i registered my ex-mil

In practice it seems to mean that the 4x4 Light Utility are a commercial vehicle, whereas Station Wagons, with windows in the back, are considered to be cars.

Which is what has led to the ludicrous situation whereby Hard Top Defenders are not permitted to enter the LEZ without paying, whereas Station Wagons with exactly the same engine and emissions can.
 
Agreed, I got into a bit of a discussion with the DVLA over this, it seems that Landrover dealers selected the catergories when they first registered the vehicles. Several catergoes were similar and so it was a bit of a lottery as to what you got, but it didn't matter then as there were no LEZs etc. Now those catergories are getting dragged out and given new meaning but as I found out, just becuase a lot of Landrovers are in a catergory such as "station wagon" does not mean you can join them. The DVLA made it clear to me that they were placing all Landrovers in "4x4 urility" from now on regardless of what they had been. Yes they would change my V5 and I choose from any option that was "4x4 untiliy", take it or leave it. I got the impression they were fed up with people changeing body styles and their solution was one style for all. Good news is ALL historic vehicles are LEZ exempt - the LEZ webpage gets this right so if you type in your reg and your veh8icle is historic it will show your vehicle exempt. If (when) Edinburgh, Bristol and Reading bring in LEZs this could get imporant.

I didn't realise this but PLG and LGV are different taxation classes:

Seriously though, this is what makes them special...they are class less. They don't really match any classification of any other vehicle properly. There really isn't a tick box for it.

A few moments of panic........a quick check on the LEZ website..........and all is well for my "motor". Couldn't see any upcoming changes either. But for how long???
When in London to visit family, I see so few older landys I can't see them really being a problem. I do my bit to reduce my emissions by traveling overnight; usually arriving at 4am
I have fun passing through-Marble Arch, Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner.......... The Mercs and Porches stay well clear

Isn't a Defender station wagon a car based on a van, so should be a "van derived car"?
 
Well, that one that they butchered on "Goblin Garage" is certainly a "car"; it's not a Land Rover anymore...

Mine's a Station Wagon that's been converted to a Hard Top. Rang the DVLA and wrote to them with pictures and the V5. All they changed was the colour, they told me they considered the van sides to be a cosmetic change only therefore, to them, it remains an Estate car...

As to what I call it, Truck, Wagon, Landy, Bastard Thing but never Car.

As far as DVLA are concerned, the original taxation class on the V5 defines the vehicle for life.
The actual windows or seats on the vehicle makes no difference to them.
