On an old 02 L322 td6 auto with just over 144000 I thought about a tuning box something called hawk (can't remember the bloody name )

The main thing concerning me is the chocolate box as it's dam near at its limit with the measly old 6 pot bm lump with only 170hp engine in something that weighs 2.5 ton+/-

Even taking it easy as I do anyway would I be wasting cash and accelerate a box rebuild or should it be ok..... opinions and help greatly appreciated.

Ah the little black box with a 2p resister in it to make the ecu think you have already pushed the throttle down,
uses more fuel for no more power

Waste of money and asking for trouble. I never understand trying to 'tune up' 3 tonne of luxury cruiser. My Td6 gets me past anything I need to get past, and pretty sharpish too, when in sport mode. Although even in sport mode she gulps diesel like it's her last drink. .She might not be a V8 but she has a lovely growl, that bounces back off the mountains, as I put the boot down and pass Sunday drivers, before the next series of bends.
If you want more grunt, sell your diesel and get a V8.

... the roar from the tdv8 really is addictive. Almost more so than the petrol I'd say.

So basically don't bother, I can't get the tdv8 right now but yes seemingly that's the one to go for as mine is the worst of everything ie crap mpg, power, box. Christ what's going for it, nothing by the sound of it.... makes the old P38 sound better.

The TD6 L322 is a great Range rover in its own right , yes the autobox is its weakness but its still a great car

Wait and buy a TDV8 4.4 . they are coming down in price, I have spoken to a few owners who have picked up very clean 120K 2011 motors for 8K. FSH etc etc. nice motors.

Cheers

That seems awfully cheap for a FSH 4.4

I was surprised, buut they searched high and low and waited and found them. 2 different vehicles both very well specced. Higher mileage than I would have wanted , but they were happy as they do low miles in the RR.

Cheers

What's going for it is, when they are running they are lovely beasts. The gearbox , once it's had it's little fit will do you another 80k or more. Fuel consumption , under normal conditions, for an old 3 tonne lump, at mid -high 20s around town and by-pass and around 30-33mpg on m-way is fairly good. Then again no-one ever bought one of these if they worry about mpg ;)
The power is also fine for the size and weight, but I suppose that depends what was expected when it was bought. The issue some new owners have is expecting a 3L engine in a big f off 4x4 , to be similar to a 3L engine in a little sports car, or coupe.
Yes the gearbox is chocolate, but don't rag it and treat it with the respect due a refined workhorse, once it has been reconditioned, it'll do the job. You wouldn't ride a Clydesdale as you do a TB. :D

A friend has just had a remap on a Defender with fairly high mileage, he is now paying the price with engine problems. The autobox on your L322 is barely up to managing the standard power/torque so upping the power is a bit like committing mechanical suicide.

I guess it is ie good in it's own right......so if that's the case, why the hell put a cadbury's box in them

As for mpg and yes i know you know you don't have for that but it helps...according the comp (which probably isn't that accurate) i get 15-18 about the doors, so the mid to high 20's as you say, not on mine unless i do a brim to brim.

Hence saying above, why put a Cadbury's box in it what were thinking about

Rowntrees were out of thier particular chocolate boxes at the time ........or more likely the customers were left to find the faults/weaknesses after buying one

Have you had a full service in your ownership? I don't know where you live , but I regularly use mountain passes. My gearbox is up and down like a rent boy's undies. I spend a lot of time over 3000 revs , and I get approx 18.5mpg as a regular return.
As soon as I go back to civilisation , she builds back to 24- 28mpg. Runs to London returned 30 -33mpg.
So I can only think you also live in Highlands and Islands, or similar. Unless you have a heavy right foot, or vehicle needs serviced from tip to toe. Or if brim to brim is saying mid 20s then believe your own measurements, as your computer may be off. Won't be the first one. ;)

And don't forget the rusty wheel arches and sill ends.:D
