Have ya tested your cyclone to see it thats working right ? valve inside it could be fooked ? worth a look , but she does look heavy tho ........

its that black plastic cylinder thats bolted to your rocker cover , follow your breather from the CAF :)

Sorry its a small pic but copy it and view/zoom that way to read it ( straight from the manual )

Its a start anyway , but like i said from the vid she is breathing quite a bit ... Theres other tests you can do too by blocking off breathers for so many seconds and seeing if your hand gets blown off the filler etc .

I think it's past the stage where you need to worry about your cyclone / breather unit, there's too much blow by there full stop. Your engine is shaking a little more violently for the revs that its running at in my opinion which immediately makes me think you've got a head gasket failure, allowing compression / combustion gasses in at least one of your cylinders to vent straight into an oil channel. It could be the push rod tubes or the oil feed inside the cylinder head (I believe it is shared with one of your front head bolts). This is then simply vented straight through the cyclone and down the breather pipe to the air intake as shown in your video.

First thing to do is have it leak tested. If one of your cylinders is well down, say around 75% when the other three are 95% +/- 2, then at least you know which cylinder you need to be concentrating on. If all four cylinders are sealing at less than 92% efficiency then you need to consider a working on all four cylinders to get them back up to at least 95% efficiency. Following the results of a leakage test, whip the head off and check the surface of the block and the head gasket for signs of failure. If there's nothing obvious, then you might want to start checking your valve seats for carbon build up, your pistons for ring wear or even cracks in the crown and worse still, wear to the bores (vertical scoring or severe polishing i.e. no cross hatching visible)

Bit of a bugger unfortunately

what i cant understand is that the landy starts run drives spot on,it doesnt smoke atall, there is no loss of power on straights its only uphill it loses power, offroad and around town it pulls really well..:frown:

I wunt worry about it then!

Have you changed yeh diesul filter/lift pump??

You have a big problem:eek:
Could be head gasket, rings, piston cracked, blocked breathers. I would follow the advice from Pos, as it could end up running on its own oil and blowing itself to bits:doh:
I have the same problem with my 200tdi but mine has got worse and worse. It was blowing oil out of the dipstick on friday, so my mate sold me a low mileage engine out of a disco he had just broght in to his scrapyard. How lucky is that.
I am in the the process of swaping engines and bits to make it a defender engine again. Will be pulling mine apart later to see whats gone wrong.
Sometimes I wonder why I love my landy so.

errmm yeh! as you say! but before you start scraping/pulling engines out there are a few simple things to check: compression, head gasket, engine breather for blockage etc. If so much compression was getting past the rings oil would be getting up-i.e would be smoking (blue).

My old series 3 has so much block pressure you could probably have blown tyres off the breather pipe but it ran well and is still doing so.

ive changed fuel filter, air filter, fuel lift pump all made no difference..the only thing i havent done is the engine breather..

as ive said earlier this landy does not smoke atall, even at nite in the cars headlights behind there is nuffin even under acceleration..

i think i need to get someone to have a look over the engine and see what they think, looks like i will be giving pete at moonraker 4x4 a call on monday when hes back of holiday

What's your fuel tank like? does it look rotten?

My current 110 200tdi had a rotten fuel tank when I bought it and had to keep emptying the crap out of the diesel filter otherwise it would'nt run above 4 mph! needless to say now changed.

Might have a blocked/squashed pipe somewhere?

Might also be the diaphram in the injection pump!

mmm the diaphram has been mentioned ,there didnt seem to be any crap in the fuel filter when i replaced it...

i would like to explore all avenues and all suggestions b4 its engine apart time, theres just no other signs of engine problems it runs/drives lovelly, its only the engine heavy breathing and the loss of power uphill

on that note then Id have a peek at your boost diaphram - does it feel like its boosting whn you drive it ? or is it just a slow acceleration ?

the boost guage is indicating that its boosting at 1 bar..
ill be honest it dont feel the turbo is doing much.i disconnected the air filter pipe to the turbo and took it for a drive and you could hear the turbo whisteling well under acceleration.

took my mates defender out which has a disco 200 in it.
and even at 50mph if you accelerate you can definately feel the turbo kick in.

mine feels a bit like my old td did

Mine ran sweet as a nut just underpowered uphill,(not many of them round these parts though) and when towing. No smoke from exhaust when running but did smoke when started from cold.
Follow the advice from Pos and from Jason before any major engine works. But I wouldn't just ignore it as they can run on their own oil and blow up.
I'm only swapping engines as I plan to recon my old one at my leisure, swap it back and put the other one in my mates 90.
I hope its not to serious but its looking as though you may have some surgery ahead.
