I have recently been offered a mazda 3.5 slt engine to put in my landrover 200tdi 130. After speaking to a couple of people i've been given conflicting opinions as to the outcome.

On one side i have been told the engine is great and my 200tdi gear box is fine and will pull like a train?

On the other side i am being told the gear box will not cope with the torque, it will continually jump out of gear and shred the gearbox and the parts for repair are like rockin horse poo?

Also would fitting an autobox be better or worse than a manual. I wanted to keep it manual, although having had automatic vehicles in the past i do prefer manual and am worried it wont be as good off road. To be fair it is a work vehicle and wont be used for testing green lane courses just carrying heavy loads off road.

Anyone who has any thoughts, views or experience will be much appreciated

there is an argument that an auto box protects the transfer box , props and axles from a driver thats abrupt with the clutch, giving some protection from shock loads of excessive torque.

providing you can mate the gearbox to the engine ok and its all old enough to not have computers all over it everything else is only basic engineering.... with a grinder and welder anything is possible...... whether its worth all the hassle depends on what you want from the vehicle.... if yer current engine is knackered there are pleanty of 200 or 300 tdi engines about that will go in without any hassle

Putting such engines in landrovers work fine on road , but tend to be a bit of a pain off road , as they make the front heavy not good! I put a 3.8 leyland in a 109 , had to change diffs and fit o/d was good 60mph cruise with or without heavy trailer, uphill as well. The mazda engine good unit , very reliable, quite fuel efficient , I had one in a school bus in australia , but not rev range of 200/300tdi . HTSH

i have a mazda 3.5 slti engine in my 1989 rangerover verry torq lump and its had alandrover bell houseing machined to take the flywheel and starter but retains the same box as what was on the vogue v8 before the engine was swapped now built 3 cars for offroad with this engine and they all performe excelent offroad not such a great lump on fuel but against the v8 much improved we have had one of theys cars pull 6 or 7 other landrover around and arena with ease imo i love the wacking great lump :)
