stop using supermarket fuel, if your not, clean your injectors, its not missing, but its not running as it should.

That doesn't sound too bad, but it certainly isn't right. Check the valve clearances and take the oil filler cap off when it's running to see if there is any smoke or pressure under it.

No smoke or pressure when it's running from the oil cap, already checked that. It's only done 74k so I'd hope it's nothing major!

I'll reset the tappets see if that helps.

Defo misfire there.
Whilst its idling crack each injector in turn and see what difference each one makes, the one thats makes the least difference could be the cause of your prob, may also be inj pump.
I doubt its timing as its sounds like its just one cylinder.
Valve clearances as mentioned worth a look, maybe bent pushrod or broken lash cap, lash cap shouldnt make its misfire though

I've ordered a set of pushrods and lash caps, I'll change them, reset the tappets and see how it goes.

If no change then I'll start looking at the injectors and pump.

No idea tbh. I've only had it 6 weeks, spent nigh on £2.5k on fixing it so far and seem to be chasing my tail with its mechanical issues!

Replaced the pushrods & lash caps (two were missing, and the valve clearance very loose on those) yesterday (original pushrods all seemed straight and ok but replaced them anyway), reset the tappets and it is much quieter and smoother, however it's now making another noise and im fairly sure it has a boost leak somewhere (haven't had chance to check if the two are linked)

Also I realised the cold start relay had been disconnected, plugged it back in and now the glow plug light comes on as it should. No idea why it was disconnected!?!???

To stop the glow plugs being used in the summer and save the battery a bit? TDI does not need glows to start.
