Not unexpected really considering LR has been fighting a rear-guard action against driver/pedestrian safety legislation for years. I've no doubt that the Defender will continue to be built in countries that lack such regulation (remember that LR is owned by Tata) & the UK market will probably see an increase in the value of pre-owned examples, esp. the latest ones.
 
It wouldn't surprise me if the tooling is shipped elsewhere and it's built in small quantities either directly by LR or under licence. The new model is due in 2017/18 IIRC.

I wouldn't take autocar's articles too seriously- for the past few years they've been speculating on the same minute bits of information, coming up with images of 'what it might look like' and pretending they have something exclusive.

JLR is expanding though, and so more manufacturing locations are inevitable. We can speculate all day about how exactly the production will be split between various sites, but until JLR tell us, we can't know for sure.

Safety issues are a red herring as are emissions, Jeep are keeping the Wrangler in production, it's just too labour intensive to produce in the UK.
We heard here that production is going to India, logical as LR is owned by TATA.
 
Don't understand why new Defenders fail on emissions (in terms of not meeting the EU requirements for after 2015) they have a modern diesel engine used in a fair number of cars eg Ford

As I said, it's a red herring as is the safety issue.
 
It doesn't help that, by modern standards at least, the defender really isn't a very good car for the price. Compared to just about every other comparable vehicle it's labour-intensive to build, has some oddly placed controls, isn't very economical etc etc. Unless you're one of a very small group (where it genuinely does offer the best compromise) there are other vehicles you can buy which will do the same thing and are much better value for money.
